Original Metroid Prime 4 Pre-orders On Amazon Are Being Cancelled

Those who had pre-ordered Metroid Prime 4 on Amazon are discovering that their pre-orders are being canceled. Back in 2017, Nintendo revealed that the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4 was in production, with Kensuke Tanabe, the original trilogy producer, taking charge. However, unlike the first three Metroid Prime games which were developed by Retro Studios, this sequel was to be created by Bandai Namco Studios in Japan and Singapore.

Approximately two years after the initial announcement, Nintendo disclosed that the development of Metroid Prime 4 needed to be restarted from scratch, with Retro Studios taking over from Bandai Namco Studios as developers because the latter did not seem to meet Nintendo’s quality standards. In 2024, Nintendo unveiled the first official trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, showcasing Samus beginning a new adventure at a distant Galactic Federation Research Facility and offering glimpses of its first-person action. Although an official release date for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has yet to be set, Nintendo plans to launch it in 2025.

Currently, some prior orders for the earlier version of Metroid Prime 4 on Amazon are getting canceled, as per NintendoLife’s report. A Reddit user named mecha_flake is among those who discovered that their pre-order has been terminated, and they shared the cancellation message received from Amazon in the r/Metroid community. The cancellation notice indicates that the order was so old it retained the special discount Amazon had at the time, and other customers are confirming similar cancellations of their orders.

Amazon Is Canceling Original Metroid Prime 4 Pre-Orders

Amazon’s formal statement indicates that the cancellation of Metroid Prime 4 is due to “insufficient supply,” a situation possibly caused by the restarting of development for Metroid Prime 4 and the significant time elapsed since the initial pre-orders on Amazon’s online platform. Some customers are hypothesizing that Amazon may not wish to honor the original pre-order price of $48, given that many new Nintendo exclusives typically retail at around $70.

It seems that the cancellations of pre-orders only involve the initial version of Metroid Prime 4, which was announced in 2017. This doesn’t appear to indicate any additional issues with the revamped Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The next installment in Samus’ first-person adventure is still scheduled for release in 2025, and some speculate that Metroid Prime 4 could potentially debut as a launch title for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
