During the process of creating his reboot movie, Gunn faced various aspects of the Superman ensemble. At one point, he even sought advice from Snyder. One major choice he made was introducing Krypto, Superman’s occasional comic book ally and fellow super-powered crime fighter, for the first time in this new film.

I’m excited about the chatter surrounding Krypto potentially being Gunn’s secret edge for DCU’s triumph, and I can confirm that Krypto’s presence in the project is already making waves in WBD’s marketing approach. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, WBD intends to leverage its 21st annual Puppy Bowl event as a promotional platform for the upcoming Superman movie.

In addition to the traditional competition and a new “Krypto Super Play” award for participants, Gunn himself and his dog Ozu (who fans will appreciate for serving as the inspiration behind Krypto in the forthcoming movie) are scheduled to attend this event. They’ll be screening a special sneak peek of the Superman film and delivering an exclusive message to viewers, alongside the preview.

Although this isn’t your typical marketing tactic WBD could have employed before the Superman release this year, it undeniably promises to be the most adorable marketing campaign they’ll pull off, and Discovery exec Howard Lee concurs.

Each year, Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl functions as a popular cultural television event that gains more popularity, recognition, and of course, adorable puppies. Regardless of the outcome, Puppy Bowl XXI on February 9 will feature the most adorable players in the game. This event is likely to motivate families nationwide to welcome a new furry companion into their homes by adoption.

For approximately two decades, the Puppy Bowl has been a beloved annual television tradition on Animal Planet. In this unique spectacle, teams of puppies compete in a mock football game within a specially designed stadium. All participating dogs are rescue animals from shelters, and the event aims to encourage pet adoption by showcasing these animals. The simultaneous promotion of the film Krypto is strategic, as it not only expands awareness of the movie and its character but also boosts viewership for the Puppy Bowl, thereby supporting a worthy cause. This year’s edition promises 142 adorable puppies from 80 shelters and aims to surpass last year’s impressive 12.6 million total viewers.

Krypto could significantly boost the DCU’s fame, and it seems Warner Bros. Discovery acknowledges this. Many viewers may recognize Krypto from his animated portrayal by Dwayne Johnson, while others will encounter the character for the first time in the upcoming movie.
