Next week, I’m eagerly looking forward to tuning into Xbox’s third annual Developer Direct. As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but wonder about the fourth secret game they might unveil this time around. The Developer Directs started back in January 2023, offering a direct line of communication between some of their studios’ developers and Xbox fans, revealing details about their upcoming games. Remember when Tango Gameworks dropped Hi-Fi Rush out of nowhere after the very first event? That really put the Developer Direct on the map! Last year’s event gave us a sneak peek into Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and even had Square Enix showcasing Visions of Mana. So, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us this time!
Once again, just like a reliable timepiece, Xbox is gearing up for its third Developer Direct, set to air on Thursday, January 23. The tech giant has announced three upcoming games slated for 2025 that fans can look forward to: “Doom: The Dark Ages”, “South of Midnight”, and the intriguing turn-based RPG by Sandfall Interactive titled “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33“. Furthermore, Xbox has hinted at a fourth game that will be unveiled during the event, although they’ve kept tight-lipped about any additional details. Since the announcement, Xbox enthusiasts have been brimming with curiosity and speculation as to what this fourth game might entail, with some eagerly anticipating possible returns of beloved titles like Fable, The Outer Worlds 2, or even a continuation of the popular franchise, “Gears of War: E-Day“.
In Jez Corden’s latest article for Windows Central about Xbox’s future, he hints at the upcoming Developer Direct event and offers a significant clue regarding the fourth unannounced game. According to Corden, this game is part of an established Japanese intellectual property with a long-standing history, possibly dispelling speculation that it originates from Xbox’s internal studios.
Xbox Developer Direct Mystery Game Could Be a New Entry in a Legendary Japanese Franchise
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but speculate about the possibility of Square Enix gracing us with their presence again at this year’s Direct event. With their impressive showcase of Visions of Mana last time, it’s tempting to think they might return, possibly unveiling a brand new Final Fantasy game.
However, considering Square Enix’s ongoing partnership with PlayStation for the development of Final Fantasy, and given that we’ve just seen two major mainline FF games and a remake of FF7, it seems quite unlikely that they would be ready to reveal another one so soon.
Similarly iconic franchises such as Capcom’s “Resident Evil” and Sega’s “Persona” spring to mind. While new “Resident Evil” games are often unveiled at PlayStation events, there have been whispers that “Resident Evil 9” has been in development for a while and could be ready for a big reveal soon. As for “Persona”, it’s worth noting that Xbox collaborated with Sega for the marketing of “Metaphor: ReFantazio”, and given the rumors about “Persona 6” being scheduled for a 2025 release, a showing at Xbox’s Developer Direct could be significant. Additionally, there’s speculation about a potential new installment in the “Ninja Gaiden” series from Team Ninja. Given the strong bond between this franchise and Xbox during the original Xbox era, it wouldn’t be unexpected if Xbox worked with Team Ninja again for a fresh take on “Ninja Gaiden”.
Though these potentials are undeniably thrilling, they remain merely theoretical. Xbox’s Developer Direct on Thursday, January 23rd, serves as the best place for fans to gather more details about Compulsion Games’ ‘South of Midnight’, ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’, and ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’. Moreover, it promises revelations regarding an as-yet unidentified fourth game.
