Obscure Species In One Piece

Summary

  • One Piece has a diverse array of species and races, contributing to a dynamic and less static world.
  • Certain species like Wotans and Snakenecks reveal unique traits, but their roles in the series are unclear.
  • Buccaneers, Lunarians, and other lesser-known species hint at a vast, diverse world in One Piece.

One Piece’s universe is richly detailed, featuring numerous races and species that extend beyond the main narrative. This expansive lore makes the world feel more dynamic and less static compared to certain other fictional universes, even though it’s still a single story at its core.

In the universe of One Piece, certain species have been verified to exist, yet their significance within the grand storyline and how they intertwine with it, if at all, remains largely unexplored. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will continue to be enigmatic indefinitely. These species are somewhat mysterious in the world of One Piece, but their secrets may yet be unraveled.

10. Wotans

Half-Giant, Half-Fish-Man

  • Notable Wotans: Big Pan and Sebastian

A less frequently emphasized element within the storyline of One Piece involves various races being able to produce offspring biologically. This is particularly evident in the Big Mom Pirates, where multiple half-human children born to Charlotte Linlin are featured. However, it’s important to note that this biological compatibility is not exclusive to humans and other humanoid species.

It’s confirmed that beings known as Wotans emerge from the offspring of Giants and Sea People. These Wotans exhibit characteristics distinct from both parent species, but it’s clear they are descendants of both. Unlike Fish-Men, Wotans appear more humanoid, which might be due to their Giant blood. They are larger than Fish-Men, although they don’t reach the height of Giants. Given their Sea People heritage, it is reasonable to assume that they are strong swimmers and may possess greater strength underwater.

In the world of One Piece, there’s only one distinct character known as Wotan who is canonically recognized. This character goes by Big Pan, a former member of the Foxy Pirates, and was part of their Groggy Monsters subgroup. He was also the largest member of the crew. Aside from Big Pan, another character named Sebastian, a World Pirate, is known but considered non-canonical. Due to the scarcity of Fish-Men and Giants coexisting in the same region and reproducing, their rarity might explain why they are not native to overlapping locations, at least not yet confirmed so.

9. Snakenecks

Long-Necked Humanoids

  • Notable Snakenecks: Charlotte Mondeé, Charlotte Amande, Charlotte Hachée, Charlotte Effilée, Charlotte Mascarpone, Charlotte Joscarpone, and Charlotte Wiro (All Half-Human Hybrids)

Just like Longlegs and Longarms, the species known as Snakenecks stand out due to their exceptionally long necks, surpassing the norm for human neck length. Unlike their long-limbed counterparts, however, only Charlotte descendants have been observed so far, which confirms their mixed human heritage. Despite the similarities in appearance between other Charlotte children and their “full-blooded” counterparts, particularly when it comes to less human features such as double-jointed arms and long legs, the ancestry of these counterparts may share more with humans. Notably, Snakenecks exhibit varying neck appearances, but the commonality is always a length that surpasses the average.

So far, what’s known about Snakenecks is that they serve as popular spouses for the character Big Mom. They have seven offspring together, and interestingly, it appears there are at least three different fathers among them, which is unusual given that Big Mom usually only marries one non-human spouse. At this point, it’s unclear what specific qualities make Snakenecks appealing father figures to her children.

8. Buccaneers

Bigger Humans

  • Notable Buccaneers: Bartholomew Kuma (Possibly A Hybrid), Clapp, Pacifistas (Artificial Cyborg), S-Bear (Artificial Cyborg)

In the world of One Piece, the Buccaneers are a group often subjected to discrimination. It’s rumored they possess some Giants’ ancestry in their lineage. Similar to full-blooded Giants, Buccaneers seem to hold a deep respect for Nika, the mythical sun god, a connection Luffy can embody through his Devil Fruit powers. Distinguishing a Buccaneer from a normal human of larger stature can be challenging without genetic testing. They appear to have unique biological traits, as demonstrated when Kuma miraculously came back to life after his self-destruct mechanism was triggered.

It’s been claimed that they once perpetrated a massive wrongdoing against the world, though its specific nature remains uncertain. Upon discovery, they were either executed or enslaved. To date, only Bartholomew Kuma and his deceased father, Clapp, have been identified as Buccaneers. Since Kuma’s mother was human, it’s unclear if he is a full-blooded or half-Buccaneer, but he is believed to be the last naturally-born individual with any Buccaneer lineage.

Contrary to their alleged wrongdoings, the Buccaneers surprisingly form a significant portion of the World Government’s defense force. Many of the cyborgs known as Pacifistas in the series are based on Bartholomew Kuma’s DNA, who was the first “Pacifista.” The newer type of Pacifistas with Lunarian blood also includes one with Buccaneer origins, as S-Bear is another clone created from Kuma.

7. Kinokobito

Mushroom People

  • There are no named members of this species

In the world of One Piece, a peculiar race seldom seen, almost non-existent within the series, is characterized by their fungal-like appearance. These humanoids bear features reminiscent of mushroom caps and are typically quadrupedal. A single individual from this species is depicted in one of Charlotte Mont-d’Or’s books, frantically crying out for assistance.

This unique sighting solidifies the Kinokobito as a seldom-seen but potentially apprehensible creature for Big Mom. Given the diversity of races in Totto Land, its captivity within a book suggests that it’s an elusive entity.

6. Three-Eye

Humanoids With An Extra Eye On Their Forehead

  • Notable Members: Charlotte Pudding (Half-Human Hybrid)

It seems that the Three-Eyed beings, similar to Buccaneers and Lunarians, are nearing extinction. They closely resemble humans, except for their distinctive third eye. This unique eye is rumored to trigger an enlightenment, bestowing upon them the Power of All Voices, enabling them to interpret poneglyphs and other abilities possessed by those who can harness such power.

Only one known member of this species is alive, and they have partial human ancestry. This individual is Charlotte Pudding, Big Mom’s daughter. Growing up, she faced a great deal of bullying, including from her own mother, due to her distinctive third eye. To hide it, she styles her hair in a particular way. Her value lies in the prospect of her awakening, but she doubts if she can attain it given her hybrid nature. However, she was pleasantly shocked when Sanji, her arranged husband, expressed that he found her eye captivating.

5. Longlimbs

Half-Longarm, Half-Longleg

  • There are no named members of this species.

In a unique blend of lineage, we find the scarcely seen creatures known as Longlimbs. These beings are offspring from unions between the Longarm and Longleg tribes, two groups historically at odds with each other. The manga portrays one such individual who carries the distinctive trait of double-jointed arms, a Longarm inheritance, along with the elongated legs characteristic of the Longlegs.

Currently, only one partially known Longlimb has been spotted, appearing as a captive alongside various species in one of Mont-d’Or’s written works. The Longlimb’s biological compatibility with other races and whether any potential offspring would inherit traits from their parent are among the numerous unanswered questions concerning the Longlimb.

4. Aliens

Animalistic Extraterrestrials

  • Notable Aliens: Seamars

In the world of One Piece, there’s only one known planet. Yet, Enel’s backstory hints at the existence of other planets with intelligent beings. Enel, a Birkan seeking the moon (or so they claim it to be the “Fairy Vearth” of their people), encounters this celestial body being plundered by a gang of space pirates for resources. In a swift act of anger, Enel attacks them and demolishes their spaceship, leaving their fate uncertain.

In the world of One Piece, only one extraterrestrial being, Seamars, is known by name and seems to lead the Space Pirates, with a physical appearance reminiscent of canines. Other supposed aliens exhibit traits similar to felines and some resembling crocodiles. It’s uncertain if these animal-like beings belong to the same species or represent multiple species. However, this intriguing observation suggests that aliens do exist within the universe of One Piece, although it remains possible that these peculiar creatures might hail from the planet where the story is set instead.

3. Lunarians

Almost Extinct

  • Notable Lunarians: King, Seraphim (Hybrids)

The Lunarians represent a unique humanoid race, characterized by black feathered wings, silvery white hair, and a rich brown complexion. Remarkably, they possess an area within their upper back that allows them to generate fire – this feature serves as a defense mechanism when ignited or boosts speed when quenched. Unlike the flight capabilities of Sky Island dwellers, Lunarian wings seem fully operational. Alongside Buccaneers and the Three-Eye Tribe, they are believed to be on the brink of extinction, despite their impressive resilience.

The only known individual born naturally into this particular race goes by the name Alber, more famously recognized as King. He serves as Kaido’s right-hand man within the Beast Pirates. Similar to Kaido, King was subjected to experiments by the government until he managed to escape and established the Beast Pirates. It is believed that he has never been defeated in a fight while part of his crew, until he was bested by Roronoa Zoro, who made a similar pledge to Luffy.

Once upon a time, the inhabitants of the Red Line, a circular continent with a reddish hue, were the Lunarians. Nowadays, this planetary region is home to Imu, the Five Elders, and other high-ranking individuals living in Mary Geoise, the World Government Capital. The reasons behind the Lunarians’ departure from their homeland are uncertain, but it may be related to their near extinction, with genocide being a potential factor in both their relocation and eventual extinction. It is interesting to note that Lunarian DNA is utilized in creating a new breed of Pacifistas called Seraphim, which also carry the genetic code of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. However, these creatures are not true Lunarians since they possess biological traits from their non-Lunarian counterparts as well.

2. Oni

Unclear Species

  • Notable Oni: Kaido, Yamato (Possibly A Hybrid)

Kaido is well-known as one of the most notorious pirates, renowned for his extraordinary endurance, enthusiasm for combat, and numerous attempted suicides. Previously serving as captain of the Beast Pirates, he was believed to be dead following his defeat at the hands of Monkey D. Luffy. Prior to this, he was one of the Four Emperors, a group of pirate captains deemed the greatest threats to the World Government’s existence. However, his loss to Luffy took away that title. He identifies himself and his son, Yamato, as “Oni“, creatures from Japanese folklore often depicted as demonic ogres. Nevertheless, the main storyline and additional resources have yet to definitively categorize the Oni as a distinct race.

Based on Kaido and Yamato’s characteristics, it seems that members of their species typically have large horns, impressive physical power, and a substantial body frame. Some believe Kaido might have Ancestry from the Ancient Giants due to this type of Giants being larger than usual and also having horns. However, the true identity and significance of Oni remains uncertain at present. Regardless, Kaido maintains a strong belief that Oni and humans should not coexist, despite appearing to have several high-ranking followers who appear human.

1. Other Species

Impossible To Document In Their Entirety

  • Notable Members: Too Many To Count, Include Caesar Clown, Gecko Moria, Magellan, Hannyabal, Charlotte Kato, Charlotte Dacquoise, Black Maria, and many more

In the world of One Piece, there are various unusual creatures like Cyborgs and Harpies, as well as hybrid beings such as Fish-Man humans. However, there are also other beings that seem to exist naturally, and while they may have distinctly inhuman features, they are often still considered human. Characters like Gecko Moria, Caesar Clown, and Magellan fall into this category, despite their unique appearances. It’s possible that humans in One Piece are more diverse than we initially thought in terms of physical appearance, or these characters might be hybrids with unclear origins.

In the Charlotte family, there exist members with striking differences, possibly indicating diverse ancestry. Linlin’s ambition to create a multiracial family suggests her own children might have fathers of unspecified or ambiguous races. For instance, Dacquoise sports wings that seem inherent to his body, while Kato bears a resemblance to a jack-o-lantern rather than a typical human. Given the presence of other mixed-race Charlottes, it’s plausible these children are hybrids of yet-to-be-identified races. However, the existence of both Devil Fruits and peculiar traits among confirmed human Charlotte offspring (like Katakuri’s pelican or eel-like mouth due to his large appetite) could imply that these individuals might simply be humans who just appear a bit unusual.

From my perspective as a devoted fan, it’s evident that the intricate portrayal of race in “One Piece” suggests a vast, multifaceted universe that extends beyond the immediate narrative. The rich diversity in character design offers a tantalizing glimpse into this expansive world.
