How to Beat The Plant Boss Blind in Balatro

Many players find certain Boss Blinds, such as Balatro’s The Plant, incredibly challenging due to its stringent rules that restrict build options significantly. This particular boss blind demands quick thinking, strategic planning, or even a sudden change in strategy.

Even seasoned Balatro players can succumb to the tricky Ante 1-7 Boss Blind. The unforgiving mechanics of this roguelike don’t show favoritism and swiftly penalize those who fail to adapt. Whether you possess a beautifully synced set of five Jokers or an apparently flawless deck, encountering one Boss Blind that says “Nope!” will instantly halt your game.

The Plant is the perfect example of this, and one boss who needs to be respected.

What Does The Plant Boss do in Balatro?

Balatro’s The Plant Boss Blind makes it so “All Face Cards are debuffed.”

To put it simply, Face Cards do not contribute to the score during this round, and any bonuses linked to these cards are temporarily frozen or inactive. If your game strategy heavily relies on Face Cards for their high scoring values, then this situation could cause significant difficulties for you!

Builds that incorporate “Pareidolia” (where all cards are considered Face Cards) and “Baron” (each King held in hand gives 1.5x Multiplier) are two reasons why Face Card strategies are widely popular. However, the Plant character may not favor these builds, so we need to understand how to counteract them effectively.

How to Beat The Plant in Balatro

Here are a few strategies to outsmart The Plant in Balatro:

1. Try the tactic of reshuffling the Boss’s deck blindly (Boss Blind Reroll).
2. Make use of the Luchador Joker.
3. Be quick to adjust your game plan.
4. Consider spending on Celestial Packs and Planet Cards.
5. Ensure you have a good number of Steel and Glass cards in your collection.

Adapt or Perish

After defeating the current boss, you’ll get a chance to face the next one known as Boss Blind. This scenario allows you up to three Shop visits (including the one you’re currently in) to strategize and make adjustments. If The Plant is three encounters away and your Deck primarily relies on Face Cards, it would be wise to sell or swap Jokers accordingly. Sticking with your current setup against The Plant might lead to a tough battle as it tends to overpower you.

Card Enhancements

I make an effort to reserve any Card Improvements for cards that are not Face Cards. You can find these as common items in the Shop and also through Tarot Cards. The modifications to the cards consist of:

  • Bonus Cards
  • Mult Cards
  • Wild Cards
  • Glass Cards
  • Steel Cards
  • Stone Cards
  • Gold Cards
  • Lucky Cards

You should consider having alternative strategies or backup cards if you’re committed to your current hand and Face Cards. Introducing Steel, Bonus, and Mult Cards into the game could potentially create a powerful combination, often resulting in a high score on the lower end. This could eliminate the need for Face Cards and help you secure victory.

Level Up Hands With Celestial Packs and Planet Cards

Improving specific hands complements the other strategies I’ve proposed. Enhancing “Pair,” “Two Pairs,” or “Three of a Kind” would work well, even a Flush. Discard any Face Cards and opt for an enhanced hand type—using Celestial Decks and Planet Cards—and the next Bet will undoubtedly follow.

Luchador Joker

In the game of Balatro, the character known as Luchador is already on the field from the beginning. You have the option to sell this card to temporarily deactivate the current Boss Blind.

As a passionate fan, I can tell you that scoring a Luchador in the Shop feels like hitting a jackpot! It often requires multiple tries and a dash of good fortune on my side. The more Jokers I unlock, the trickier it gets to secure this wrestling legend. However, adding Astronomer, Hit The Road, and Brainstorm to my arsenal is an exciting prospect, even if it does slightly lower the chances of me landing Luchador.

If you’re looking for an effective method to bypass The Plant during gameplay, trading the Luchador Card in the middle of a fight against the Boss while they are blinded will disable their special match modification.

Reroll Boss Blind

You have two options to change the Boss Blind encounter:

1. Utilize the Boss Tag, which “Resets the upcoming Boss Blind.”
2. Acquire the Director’s Cut (an option to reroll the Boss Blind once for every ante, with a cost of $10 per roll) or purchase Retcon Vouchers (unlimited rerolls of the Boss Blind, each at a cost of $10).

In this scenario, Random Number Generator (RNG) plays a significant role, but there are additional choices available too. Retcon Voucher is one of the most effective ones, and it demands that you “uncover 25 hidden spots.” While any of these methods can aid in defeating The Plant, remember that, like with the Balatro, success relies partly on chance and partly on your ability to plan wisely.

Please let me hear about your experiences with The Plant, and whether these strategies are beneficial for you. Additionally, feel free to share any additional ideas or strategies that come to mind, as they might be helpful too!
