Stepping out of your cave and adjusting to daylight, you’ll find Aloft a place that feels comfortably familiar. There are trees for chopping, stones to collect, flowers to gather, and mysterious stone slabs brimming with old wisdom. To put it simply, everything seems just as expected… but intriguingly different. This is an expansive, open-ended game world, bursting with possibilities. Gather resources, craft items, and shape the world according to your own style.
After the first hour, events become quite extraordinary. You’re given the challenge of building a glider, which isn’t particularly unusual, but this isn’t just a long jump device with a limited lifespan. Instead, these are functional wings. It’s an incredible feeling to be worry-free about constant hunger pangs. With the freedom to fly as high and as far as you want, you can hop from one island to another, investigating the remnants of abandoned communities or eradicating the invasive fungus that has disrupted local ecosystems, thereby restoring each area to its original, pristine state.
In Aloft, instead of traversing expansive grasslands or scaling snowy mountains, you’ll experience flight in an unforeseen way. After a guide on locating four stone tablets, you’ll receive components to assemble a rudder, sail, wheel, and balloon. Attach these to your preferred island for the ability to soar through the skies.
Absolutely! Instead of commuting back home every day, why not make your vehicle – a mobile, maneuverable piece of rock – your home? You can explore new regions for cleansing, dodge swirling tornadoes, gather local wildlife for farming purposes, and decorate your own patch of land. The sky is yours to shape as you wish!
Aloft stands out in its genre not only through its unique environment, but also by incorporating subtle elements that make it distinct from other games. You’ll notice this as you create new items by combining inventory items at a crafting station, but there’s more! Early on in your adventure, you’ll discover a sketchbook. Initially perplexed about how to build a charming set of four stairs with banister, you soon realize that the sketchbook allows you to jot down observations of your surroundings, adding these items to your expanding list of craftable recipes. This feature provides an engaging way to interact with the game world.
Islands may harbor corruption that requires cleansing, typically involving some straightforward combat and possibly a skirmish. After the cleansing, the necessary vegetation can be planted to reestablish ecological harmony. This process usually grants a modest reward. The combat is simplistic, perhaps overly so, but remains enjoyable whether you choose a first or third-person viewpoint. It presents a set of easy tasks, nothing too demanding.
In both combat and construction, there’s a feature that brings to mind the destruction of objects in Fortnite. As a bar grows, there’s a marked spot where you click that enhances your next action, making each moment more captivating than continuously holding down the left mouse button. This small mechanical adjustment might seem insignificant, but it significantly improves the process of gathering resources in open-world games by adding an element of excitement and engagement.
There are many exciting ventures I’m eager to experience, like automating production processes and harnessing wind energy to operate machinery on your island in 2025. As there’s always something new to learn, I anticipate devoting even more hours delving into the boundless skies throughout that year.
Initially, I thought Aloft would be like any other survival game, but I was pleasantly surprised. There’s a depth to it that isn’t immediately apparent. Aloft is a snug and inviting survival sandbox with a strong focus on inventive base construction and a poignant theme of caring for the environment, whether you’re playing alone or collaboratively in creative multiplayer mode. It combines elements of cottage-style gaming, open-world exploration, and subtle narrative threads, making it exciting to follow Aloft’s progress in the upcoming months.
Aloft is released in PC early access on January 15th.
