At CES 2025, Razer showcased a variety of innovative tech products. Among them was the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma, a collapsible dock designed specifically for devices like the Steam Deck and other gaming handhelds. This new dock/stand offers six ports and a 100W power passthrough to transform your handheld into a top-tier gaming PC. It’s set to be released on January 30th, but you can preorder it now for $80.
As handheld gaming consoles gain more popularity, it was only a matter of time before Razer stepped into the market for handheld accessories. True to form, the new docking station boasts attractive RGB lighting, which can be synchronized with other Razer Chroma devices for an added touch of gaming style. Additionally, Razer unveiled Project Arielle, a gaming chair that offers heating or cooling functions.
A New and Better Docking Station for Your Steam Deck
While there’s an abundance of Steam Deck docks available, the Razer offering boasts some additional features that make it quite enticing. One notable aspect is its design. The Handheld Dock Chroma functions more as a stand with a prominent backplate, providing extra stability for handheld devices, rather than just a basic cradle. This versatile design allows it to accommodate various handheld PCs on the market, along with other devices such as tablets and smartphones.
Razer’s design for their dock resembles one of my preferred docks for Steam Deck, the Baseus GamerX Series 6-Port Dock. They share a versatile backplate that adjusts for various viewing angles and folds flat for easy storage within a backpack. However, Razer enhances it with a robust metal construction and customizable RGB illumination that harmonizes with other Razer Chroma accessories. The potential drawback is that it might obstruct the air vents in certain handheld devices.
Regarding connectivity, the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma offers all the essentials to link your portable computer with a larger screen, keyboard, controller, and additional devices. This dock features three USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a 4K/60Hz HDMI port for high-definition visuals, an Ethernet jack for fast internet connectivity, and a 100W USB-C PD port to power the device. The dock is capable of charging your portable PC at up to 85W even while gaming, making it suitable for devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally.
The variety of available ports is noteworthy, but it’s missing the DisplayPort that comes with the authentic Steam Deck dock. This omission may not bother many users much since most TVs and gaming screens use HDMI. Interestingly, Razer provides a USB-C cable integrated into the design, which is just the right length to accommodate most handheld PCs when connected.
Razer Handheld Dock Chroma: Pricing and Availability
On January 30th, Razer will unveil their Handheld Dock Chroma, but you can place your preorder right now on their official store. The price? A reasonable $80, which aligns with the standard Steam Deck dock. Given a choice between the two, I lean towards the Razer for its stylish design and improved functionality.
If you’re in a hurry and don’t want to wait for the Razer, the Baseus GamerX Series 6-Port Dock makes an outstanding substitute. It shares the same design and comes at a lower price point, retailing for $40 on Amazon currently. Alternatively, if premium build quality and extra ports are your top priority, the official Steam Deck dock is another excellent choice.
