In a move that’s causing some controversy, Riot Games has announced that they will be changing VALORANT’s map pool for each game act, but their decision for Patch 10.04 isn’t sitting well with everyone. The second act of the 2025 season will see Abyss and Bind being taken out, while Ascent and Icebox will make a comeback.
Although some gamers might not mind the departure of Abyss, there’s a general sense of letdown among players as Ascent and Icebox are making a comeback. However, this sentiment could change if they come back with some modifications.
VALORANT Patch 10.04 Map Changes
In line with VALORANT’s revised annual season structure, the developers at Riot Games have committed to updating map selections every act. As of now, there are 11 standard maps in total, with seven of these being part of the active pool. Riot stated at the start of the year that their initial intention is to exchange two maps each act, although they mentioned this number could potentially alter during the course of the year.
Starting from March 4, 2025, during Act 2, Patch 10.04 will swap out Abyss and Bind for Icebox and Ascent. However, this shift in maps hasn’t been met with favor among the gaming community, particularly the professional players. Prior to the current act, Ascent was the only map that hadn’t been removed from the rotation, and its quick reintroduction after a brief hiatus has raised concerns. Icebox, too, has been one of the least favored maps within the community, but the main dissatisfaction seems to be centered around Ascent’s swift comeback.
Enthusiasts and participants within the VALORANT professional community are expressing discontent over the upcoming modifications. Sentinels’ coach, Adam Kaplan, is voicing his dissatisfaction about the early announcement of map changes, arguing that teams not qualifying for the first Masters event of the year will have double the time to prepare for the new maps, such as Ascent and Icebox. Moreover, Kaplan expresses concern that this could lead to an escalation in burnout among teams attending Masters, as they would have no chance to rest if they wish to stay ahead of their competition in terms of preparation.
