This year, we’re expecting two new compilation films from the series “Gintama”! Although fans may anticipate the release of “3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei,” which is scheduled for October 2025, followers of the original anime will also have something to look forward to.
The recently introduced “Gintama” anime is derived from a side story where Gintoki assumes the role of a teacher, while other characters become his students in a classroom setting. As of now, none of the popular streaming platforms such as Crunchyroll, Netflix or HiDive have announced plans to air this series.
These upcoming compilation films revolve around two key arcs: “Shinsengumi Crisis Arc” and “Kabukicho Four Devas Arc”. The first film, titled “Gintama on Theater 2D: Shinsengumi Crisis Arc“, is scheduled to debut on February 7, 2025. The second film, “Gintama on Theater 2D: Kabukicho Four Devas Arc“, will premiere on February 21, 2025. Both films are expected to run for a span of three weeks. Similar to the previous ones, there’s no confirmed international release at this point in time.
A trailer previewing both movies was released:
Shinsengumi Crisis Arc And Kabukicho Four Devas Arc
The “Shinsegumi Crisis” storyline presents us with Ito Komotaro, a trusted counselor within the Shinsegumi, and centers around a haunted sword that falls into Hijitaka’s possession. This captivating tale spans over just 5 episodes (episodes 101 through 105) of the anime series.
In the anime titled “Kabukicho Four Devas“, we’re introduced to Pirako Chin, a girl seeking the mightiest man in the Kabuki quarter. She’s actually a gangster with ambitions to establish Gintoki as the ruler of the Kabuki district. Notably, this storyline spans just five episodes (episodes #210 to #214).
Gintama Series Overview
In a fictional world, Gintama takes place during an era resembling Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868), but with an intriguing twist: alien invasions have occurred. The samurai are valiantly defending the populace, yet surprisingly, the shogun yields and welcomes these extraterrestrials into the nation. Interestingly, this storyline mirrors Japan’s diplomatic relations with foreign powers like the US and Europe following the Perry Expedition (1852-1855), where swords were also prohibited – a detail that adds to its comedic tone.
In this situation, we find Gintoki Sakata, a versatile freelancer, accompanied by Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura. They accept various peculiar tasks, many of which involve dealing with crooks. Although the storyline primarily follows individual episodes, a broader narrative is gradually unfolding in the background.
From 2003 to 2019, it was serialized and later compiled into a total of 77 volumes. Notably, Studio Sunrise, recognized for its work on the Gundam series, transformed the narrative into animation from 2006 to 2010. Subsequent arcs were adapted by Bandai Namco Pictures, who are currently working on a new spin-off animation as well.
Gintama is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
