Star Wars video games have been released quite frequently in recent years, and they often take place near the original timeline of the series. For instance, the latest Star Wars Jedi games occur after the rise of the Galactic Empire, while Outlaws is set between Episodes 5 and 6. It seems there’s a deliberate trend of revisiting the original era. With the High Republic era being one of the most distinct additions to the “new” Star Wars lore, it feels like it’s high time we see more games set in this period.
Since moving from the “Star Wars” Legends continuity to the current canon, the time before the prequel movies has been referred to as the vague era known as the High Republic age. This period is meant to depict a flourishing epoch of Jedi abundance, but its details have primarily been confined to print media thus far. In light of what could be one of the series’ biggest missed opportunities to bring this era into mainstream focus, exploring this part of the timeline in future games could be beneficial.
Star Wars’ High Republic Era Hasn’t Made the Most of Its Fresh Take on Canon
Media Set in the Recently Established Period Needs More Representation to Live Up to the Legacy of Legends
For a long time, various media releases helped create a rich and detailed universe within the Legends canon. However, the same level of detail hasn’t been given to the High Republic era as of now. The premature cancellation of the Star Wars: The Acolyte series might have ignited curiosity about the end of the High Republic Era, but without renewal, this aspect is once again underdeveloped beyond books and comics.
Star Wars Games Have Provided Some of the Strongest Expansions of the Franchise
Among Star Wars enthusiasts, the era of the Old Republic remains one of the most cherished portions of the series’ extended lore. For more than two decades, there’s been a strong demand for a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This classic approach to the IP, developed primarily by BioWare in their RPG, has retained its allure as the gaming industry has expanded and gained mainstream popularity.
A Video Game Set in the High Republic Era Could Redeem the Missed Potential of The Acolyte
The Foundation of a Stronger Future for the Canceled Series Doesn’t Need to Be Left Behind
Despite not being universally well-received by audiences, it’s plausible that Star Wars: The Acolyte, if given another chance, could have corrected its errors across multiple seasons. Since the story is set towards the end of the High Republic era, characters like Sol and Indara who appeared in the show could potentially reappear in a narrative that takes place during earlier years. Instead of investing in an entire series or movie, a video game set at the end of this period or focusing on its triumphant past could offer a more satisfying gaming experience with less risk.
During the Jedi’s most significant era, it’s clear that the involvement in politics was just as crucial as the allure of stepping into their roles. When Quantic Dream’s Star Wars Eclipse is eventually released, there’s a strong possibility that the typical expectations for gameplay within this IP could change dramatically. Instead of focusing on intense battles, this shift might lead to a more subtle influence on the galaxy.
