In 2024, only a small number of films achieved the same level of box office success as Wicked did, but even after it became available for digital purchase on New Year’s Day, Jon M Chu’s masterpiece continued to shatter records.

Wicked Moves to Third on List of All-Time Grossing Universal Movies

Regardless of being in its eighth week at the box office and facing tough competitors like Sonic the Hedgehog, Wicked continues to rake in profits in cinemas, earning an extra five million over the weekend. This latest haul boosts the Wicked’s domestic total to a staggering $459 million, placing it firmly among Universal’s top three highest-grossing films of all time. Wicked has just surpassed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which made $439 million following its release in 1982. Only The Super Mario Bros. Movie with $574 million and Jurassic World with $653 million have earned more for Universal.

If you found the $459 million domestic profit astonishing, hold onto your seats as Wicked is about to make even more waves on the global scene. At this moment, it has amassed an extra $238 million internationally, pushing its overall earnings to a staggering $697 million worldwide. With such momentum, Wicked is poised to surpass the $700 million mark – a milestone achieved by only four other movies set to release in 2024.

Wicked in a Tier of Its Own

Before Wicked became one of Universal’s top-earning films, it was already setting records for musical adaptations. In fact, back in December 2021, Wicked surpassed Mamma Mia! as the highest-grossing film based on a Broadway show, raking in over $611 million globally. With the movie poised to exceed $700 million, it’s likely that Wicked will hold the title of the most successful Broadway musical at the box office for quite some time.

The cinematic run of the Wicked film is wrapping up as it becomes available on digital platforms, but there’s still a chance for more recognition during awards season. Already, Wicked has garnered a Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, with three additional nominations – Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy).

Fans of the musical “Wicked” can look forward to seeing the sequel, titled “Wicked: For Good,” on screens much sooner than they might expect. The film is slated for release on November 21st this year, and fans can anticipate more individual scenes focusing on Elphaba and Glinda.
