In an extraordinary fashion, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba” masterfully depicts the struggle between righteousness and wickedness in a unique manner, by employing demons as its medium. Initially, it might seem that “Demon Slayer” is merely a typical shonen series with a boy embarking on a quest to avenge his family slaughtered by a demon, and later joining the demon slayer corps, all while searching for a remedy for his sister who has been transformed into a demon.
As the narrative progresses, we’re given a unique perspective on portrayals of evil: “Demon Slayer” offers a fresh take by delving into the demons’ histories and personal tragedies, thereby humanizing them.
How Demon Slayer Redefines Good And Evil
Demons Were Once Human Too
In many other anime, monsters and demons are typically depicted as beings who embody evil exclusively, causing chaos and eventually being vanquished by our shonen protagonist. Essentially, they serve as tools for character development in the storyline. However, in Kimetsu No Yaiba, the representation of demons is significantly distinct.
In most anime, monsters and demons are usually portrayed as beings who know nothing but evil, causing chaos and eventually being defeated by our shonen hero, serving primarily as a means to facilitate character growth within the series. Yet, in Kimetsu No Yaiba, the depiction of demons is strikingly different.
In a former life, I was married and had a child, much like any other person. However, the instant I transformed into Muzan Kibutsuji, the demon, my existence lost all purpose.
In the series Demon Slayer, it’s revealed that demons were initially humans who fell into their demonic form under unfortunate circumstances. Most of the demons portrayed in the story carry a sad history and a reason for their descent into darkness or evil behavior.
Exploring The Humanity In The Demons Of Kimetsu No Yaiba
Most demons that Tanjiro encounters in battles usually have deeply moving and tragic backstories. One of the first was Rui, a spider demon dwelling on Mount Natagumo alongside his demonic kin.
Initially, it appeared as if these beings were merely twisted Demons, driven by an insatiable thirst to slaughter humans out of bloodlust. However, upon further investigation, we uncovered their heartrending history, among them Rui, who yearned deeply for a family that could love and nurture him.
Representation Of Human Flaws
In Demon Slayer, each demon portrayed serves as a symbol of human imperfections. The anime masterfully creates characters that grapple with genuine life challenges, making them all the more relatable. These challenges range from deep sorrow, envy, social exclusion, and more. Remarkably, the series effectively illustrates these universal struggles through its demon characters.
What prevented me from leaving no trace, from transforming myself into something else? What kept me from becoming someone new? Why do we differ so greatly? And why on earth did they bring me into this world? (Kokushibo)
Daki and Gyutaro, as portrayed in the Entertainment District Arc, exemplify this concept perfectly. Throughout the storyline, these siblings frequently create chaos and take lives. Yet, upon delving into their past, it becomes clear that they are victims of societal unfairness and prior traumas, molding them into the antagonists we encounter today.
The intricate personalities in question aren’t straightforward to decipher due to their ambiguous alignment between righteousness and wickedness. This is why Daki qualifies for a journey to heaven, given that she didn’t take any lives as a human. Consequently, it appears that many demons possess the potential for redemption and salvation if they had led virtuous lives in their human existence.
Tanjiro’s Role In Understanding The Demons
One key factor that sets Tanjiro apart among shonen genre protagonists is his unique perspective: despite suffering the loss of his entire family at the hands of a merciless demon, he maintains an optimistic view of demons, seeing humanity within them. For Tanjiro, a demon’s essence isn’t defined by its status as a demon, but rather by its actions. Throughout the series, when Tanjiro meets a demon and learns about its sorrowful history, he consistently focuses on their suffering and empathizes with them.
In his perspective, these battles are quite distressing. Following his victories against Yahaba and Susamaru, we observe him pleading for tranquility in the hereafter of these demons. Moreover, when Tanjiro meets benevolent demons such as Tamayo and Yushiro, he extends a helping hand to them instead.
How Tamayo And Yushiro Proved That Demons Can Be Good
Tamayo’s character is captivating, given that she’s among the scant Demons who successfully escaped Muzan’s control. A tragic turn of events occurred when she was transformed into a Demon; she ended up killing her own family, causing immense sorrow. In an attempt to find redemption and make amends for her wrongdoings, Tamayo leverages her medical expertise to aid humans and thwart Muzan’s influence.
I’m committed to championing change, making a difference for individuals, one by one. My goal is to establish a world where no one endures pain as I have – Tomayo.
During the storyline known as the Infinity Castle Arc, she collaborates with Shinobu, the Insect Hashira, to aid them against Muzan. Meanwhile, Yushiro was transformed into a demon by Tamayo in an attempt to save his life.
This is the reason he considers Tamayo his greatest rescuer and is prepared to take any action to safeguard her. Additionally, he collaborates with the Demon Slayer Corps and assists them whenever needed, primarily due to Tamayo’s kind disposition.
Nezuko Acting As A Bridge Between Humans And Demons
In a nutshell, Nezuko significantly contributes to the understanding that not every Demon is evil. Initially transforming into a Demon and attacking Tanjiro upon metamorphosis, Nezuko, despite her unruly bloodlust as a new Demon, quickly halted her aggression once she recognized her assailant was none other than her cherished brother.
Assisted by Tanjiro, she adjusts and chooses to rest rather than consume humans, thus rejuvenating her strength. In numerous conflicts, Nezuko significantly contributes to aiding her brother. Be it the battle against Rui or versus Daki in the Entertainment District storyline, Nezuko is always ready to employ her demon abilities to safeguard humanity.
Even if I become a demon, I’ll always protect my brother – Nezuko
Indeed, many demons in our lore find themselves ensnared by a heartbreaking past and unfortunate circumstances. However, there’s one entity that buckles this trend – the exceptional Muzan Kibutsuji. Despite being offered numerous opportunities for redemption, he remains unyielding in his perspective, viewing humans as mere livestock. And when the situation calls for it, he has no qualms about taking their lives. It’s a chilling reminder that not all who walk the demon path can be saved or reformed.
He goes as far as eliminating any obstacles that are demons, such is his intense dread of perishing. This fear has transformed him into a ravenous beast, hungry for power, striving to be the most formidable demon ever known, and he’s prepared to take any measures necessary to reach this goal.
