Summary
- Starfield’s original plan for gore & dismemberment was scrapped due to technical complexities.
- Bethesda didn’t reduce violence in Starfield intentionally; space suits caused the changes.
- Bethesda’s successful Starfield RPG may have a sequel, potentially addressing the original game’s issues.
Initially, Starfield by Bethesda was conceived with a more graphic depiction of violence, including gore and dismemberment. Yet, due to technical constraints, these elements were not included in the final version of the game.
If you’re disheartened by the apparent absence of graphic violence such as dismemberment in Bethesda’s recent games like Fallout 4, it’s essential to understand that this isn’t a reduction in violence from Bethesda, but rather, a result of how the game’s space suits are designed.
Starfield’s Violence Factor Was Originally Planned To Be Way Higher
During an online conversation with Kiwi Talkz (through IGN), the ex-character artist Dennis Mejillones, who worked on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, shared his thoughts about space suits making the design process overly intricate.
He stated, “From a technical standpoint, managing the various suits was complex.” He further explained, “It involves intricate details like carefully cutting the helmet, ensuring it can be removed, and attaching meat caps at the bottom where the flesh is. Mejillones went on to say, “We had systems in place for all of this, but it became quite tangled. Now we have to consider all these additional factors such as the wild hoses attached to the helmets and other modifications. Plus, altering the character’s body size has become much more complex due to the advancements made in the character creator.
Based on the information provided by Mejillones, it seems unlikely that the game will receive updates with elements like gore or dismemberment. However, perhaps the modding community could create custom content for such features.
Starfield, launched in September 2023, marks Bethesda’s debut in eight years for a standalone single-player RPG in the sci-fi genre. Living up to anticipation, our team rated it 9/10. Towards the end of last year, the game’s first premium expansion, Shattered Space, was unveiled, adding fresh narrative elements to the experience.
Given the game’s resounding critical and commercial triumph, spectators may anticipate a follow-up. Although Bethesda hasn’t confirmed this yet, a former team member believes it could be an extraordinary title, as it is expected to tackle concerns from the original game.
If a sequel is announced, one of the game’s previous creators suggests that Bethesda might want to consider using Unreal Engine 5 for their game engine in the future.
