Approximately 7 months have passed since the initial reveal of Gears of War: E-Day at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, a live-streamed event. Since then, there’s been limited information about Gears of War: E-day, mainly consisting of E-Day merchandise for the Xbox Gear Shop and confirmation that John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro will return to their roles as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. Despite this, an official release date for E-Day hasn’t been set. In contrast, other games unveiled at the same event have already received updates, release dates, and gameplay demonstrations, like Doom: The Dark Ages. Given this scarcity of news, The Coalition should aim to make a significant impact with the next major announcement about E-Day.

Everything Known About Gears of War: E-Day So Far

Although there’s been a dearth of recent news about “Gears of War: E-Day”, The Coalition swiftly shared a wealth of details regarding their upcoming project following its unveiling. In an Xbox Wire article titled “Reinventing a Mad World: Why Gears of War: E-Day Signifies the Future of the Series”, Creative Director Matt Searcy and Brand Director Nicole Fawcette delved into the setting and tone of “E-Day” and clarified why “E-Day” is being produced instead of “Gears 6”. Searcy and Fawcette revealed that the narrative thread left at the end of “Gears 5” isn’t discarded, but The Coalition was brimming with excitement to narrate the story of Emergence Day since it’s the genesis of all the key events in the “Gears of War” franchise.

In “Gears of War: E-Day”, the story unfolds 14 years prior to the events of the first game and approximately 42 years before “Gears 5”. This is when the Locust Horde emerged from their underground tunnels in Sera, initiating the 17-year-long Locust War. In this prequel, players will control young characters Fenix and Santiago as they form a friendship and learn to combat the grubs. The gameplay is expected to be reminiscent of the classic “Gears of War” series, but the Locust will appear more terrifying than ever to emphasize the COG’s shock and lack of preparedness for the invasion. The trailer for “E-Day” demonstrates this, showing Fenix struggling against a common Locust Drone with a Retro Lancer.

How Gears of War: E-Day Can Hit the Floor Running in 2025

Although Gears of War: E-Day wasn’t present at the Consumer Technology Association trade show along with Doom: The Dark Ages in 2025, The Coalition still has several chances to share fresh details and gameplay with the public throughout the year. E-Day might pop up unexpectedly during the Xbox Developer Direct on January 23rd, as its companion game Doom: The Dark Ages is expected to have a full game unveiling at that event. It may also appear at the DICE Awards and Summit in February, but it seems more likely that Gears of War: E-Day will resurface again during the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase or Summer Games Fest in June. Given The Coalition’s tight-lipped approach to E-Day, they might prefer waiting until its one-year anniversary to astound players with new updates.

The in-engine announce trailer for E-Day may not accurately represent its actual gameplay. Given that The Coalition has emphasized the Locust’s terrifying resurgence in E-Day, a demonstration could portray Fenix and Santiago navigating a Seran city where emergence holes are opening everywhere, consuming large groups of people, and releasing waves of Locust soldiers. In terms of direct confrontations, this demo might feature Fenix attempting to impale a Drone with a Retro Lancer, but the weapon bouncing off its skin, underscoring the COG’s unpreparedness and the importance of the chainsaw bayonet.

Potential New Gears of War: E-Day Details

Based on the gameplay demo of “Gears of War: E-Day”, The Coalition might reveal a potential release window, either towards the end of 2025 or in 2026. This is speculated because “Gears of War 4” and “Gears 5” were both launched around a year after their initial announcements in 2015 and 2018 respectively. To engage current and new players, The Coalition could also announce a public beta for the game’s PvP multiplayer and PvE horde mode, which has been six years since “Gears 5” was released.
