Summary
- The Nintendo Switch 2 trailer hints at the console’s Joy-Cons having mouse functionality.
- Many rumors about the upcoming console were confirmed in its announcement trailer, including its U-shaped kickstand and additional USB-C port.
- A Nintendo Direct will reveal more about the Switch 2 on April 2.
After much anticipation, Nintendo unveiled the next generation console, the “Switch 2”. It appears that the Joy-Con controllers will have features similar to a computer mouse for enhanced functionality. There have been whispers about this successor to the 2017 hit hybrid system for quite some time, and the official trailer has confirmed many of these speculations. One of the most notable aspects of the Switch 2 announcement is the potential ability to use Joy-Cons as a computer mouse, a feature not seen from Nintendo since the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).
The trailer for the anticipated Switch 2 was released on January 16th, and as anticipated by many fans due to prior leaks, it mostly validated their expectations regarding the console’s features. However, there is some ambiguity about certain visuals in the reveal, notably the Joy-Con controllers, with the trailer not explicitly confirming that they possess mouse functionality, but instead suggesting it subtly.
In about half of the initial preview, the video displays two Joy-Con attachments moving sideways across a level surface, suggesting they function like a computer mouse. Although no accompanying screen action is shown, this movement seems to be explaining how the controllers work in this manner. Earlier speculations hinted at the possibility that Switch 2 could emulate mouse functionality, with whispers about customs manifests featuring the same type of protective tape usually found when transporting computer mice. Additionally, leaked images seemed to depict what many perceived as optical sensors on the side of the Joy-Con, which were seen moving face-down in the trailer.
Nintendo Switch 2 Trailer Seemingly Confirms Joy-Con Mouse Functionality
In addition to confirming mouse-like functionality for Joy-Cons, Nintendo also validated other features that were previously leaked or rumored in the trailer. Towards the end of 2024, unofficial sources hinted at the Switch 2 featuring magnetic Joy-Cons and a U-shaped kickstand. Both these elements can be observed in the official announcement. Furthermore, a mysterious “C” button under the home option on the right Joy-Con, a larger screen, an extra USB-C port on top of the console, and new buttons on the back of the controllers were also present in the trailer. Overall, the system appears to align with the predictions made by leaks and rumors.
If the demonstration video suggests that the new Joy-Con function is similar to the one seen on the Lenovo Legion GO controller, it implies that the Switch 2 might not be unique in this feature. The Lenovo Legion GO, recently revealed, features a detachable controller with mouse-like controls, much like Nintendo’s Joy-Cons. However, for details about the potential specifications of the Switch 2, fans will likely have to wait until the April 2 Direct event for further information.
