Back in October, a significant transformation took place within the team behind Xbox’s Halo series, known as 343 Industries. They officially announced that they would now be called Halo Studios, reflecting their long-standing dedication to the Halo franchise. Simultaneously, Halo Studios disclosed their intention to depart from their Slipspace Engine, developed for Halo Infinite, and instead opt for Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 for all upcoming Halo projects.
Currently, it appears Halo Studios is running at full capacity after making a change to their engine. A gaming industry insider named Rebs Gaming shared a YouTube video discussing a recent LinkedIn post from Xbox that hinted at Halo Studios’ enhanced playtesting infrastructure. In the post, Susan Bunch, Halo Studios’ Playtest Manager, mentioned they conducted a test session for artists and designers to try out maps similar to those in active development while working on Unreal Engine explorations. This reference to maps being actively developed has led Rebs Gaming to speculate that a new announcement related to the _Halo_ series could be made sooner than expected.
New Halo Game Reveal Could Happen in 2025, According to Insider
It’s been understood that the development of Halo Infinite‘s Slipspace engine required a significant amount of time, possibly causing the large gap between its release in 2021 and Halo 5: Guardians, which came out in 2015. Switching to Unreal Engine 5 might enable Halo Studios to produce new Halo games more frequently than before, and make it simpler to include fresh content in multiplayer modes. Additionally, there’s speculation about a potential remake of Halo: Combat Evolved that may still be under consideration. If the next Halo game is indeed coming out quickly following the switch to Unreal Engine and a 2025 reveal proves accurate, it could be a more focused spin-off title, while Halo Studios might have bigger plans for the future.
