Wow! I was totally taken aback when Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 on Thursday, January 16, 2025, bright and early in the morning. This new console has a bit of nostalgia with its shape reminiscent of the original Switch, but it’s not just a carbon copy – it sports two detachable joy-cons that can be used independently or combined for a single controller experience.
However, Nintendo has got some exciting surprises in store for us with this new model, setting it apart from its hybrid predecessor. Unfortunately, we only got a sneak peek through the brief trailer they released, but here’s what we know so far about the fresh features and changes.
Changes To The Console Itself
The updated Switch 2 model boasts a larger and chunkier design compared to its predecessor, resembling Valve’s Steam Deck in shape. It’s more rounded and less edgy. While it seems poised for noticeable advancements in graphics, processing power, and battery life, the specific system specifications remain undisclosed. However, some physical modifications to the console have been unveiled.
A Larger Kickstand
Similar to the Switch OLED model, the Switch 2 sports a redesigned stand, enabling gamers to set it on a table or comparable platform during gameplay. However, the new stand in the Switch 2 is larger and offers greater flexibility, accommodating a wider range of tilt angles for player comfort. Unlike the Switch OLED’s more angular design, the Switch 2’s stand assumes a “U” shape for increased versatility.
A Secondary USB-C Port
In the unveiling trailer, the second USB-C port on the Switch 2 is highlighted, situated alongside the headphone jack. This fresh addition complements the original port found under the console, which serves for charging and connecting various accessories. The inclusion of this additional port allows players to connect multiple accessories simultaneously. Specifically, it enables users to utilize a secondary accessory while the device is being charged.
The unique USB-C port on the Nintendo Switch sometimes causes issues for users who wish to use non-Nintendo accessories, as this port follows a custom rather than universal standard. However, it’s possible that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 may feature USB-C ports that conform to industry standards, allowing players to connect their console to high-end display devices or perform fast data transfers if needed.
Changes To The Joy-Cons
The design of the Joy-Cons for the Nintendo Switch has been updated. They’re larger and longer to align with the expanded size of the console itself. Unlike before, they now come in a sleek black finish, but still feature vibrant accents around the analog sticks and on their inner edges. Additionally, their detachable grips and wrist straps will still be colorful. The Joy-Cons displayed in the trailer are red and blue, similar to the standard Switch Joy-Cons. However, it’s expected that Nintendo might introduce various colored Joy-Cons down the line.
Enlarged buttons, including the SL and SR ones for independent control, are now more prominent on the updated Joy-Cons due to their larger size. The strip of LED lights that indicates pairing with the Switch is now positioned along the front edge of the controller for easier visibility.
Joy-Con Attachment Style Has Changed
Instead of fitting onto rails that attach to the sides of the console, as seen on the original Switch, the Joy-Cons for the Switch 2 are designed to slot directly into the sides of the device. Each side of the console has a protruding connector that secures the Joy-Con. While it’s unconfirmed, there have been rumors suggesting that the Joy-Cons may attach via magnets on the Switch 2. However, due to some players reporting wear and damage on the rails used for attaching Joy-Cons to the base Switch over time, it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo explored alternative solutions.
A New Release Trigger
On the Nintendo Switch 2, instead of small buttons for disconnecting the Joy-Con controllers, there’s now a larger trigger. This design change should make it easier to detach the Joy-Cons, especially if they use magnets. Pressing this trigger might produce the familiar “snap” sound heard when separating Joy-Cons or in Nintendo Direct presentations.
A Mysterious New Button
In the unveiling trailer for Switch 2, there appears a fresh button on the lower right side of the Joy-Con, positioned beneath the existing Home button. The purpose of this new button remains uncertain, as it wasn’t demonstrated in the video. Some speculate that it could be connected to the Joy-Con’s possible functionality as a computer mouse.
A Small Lens
Near the connection point between the Joy-Con and the Nintendo Switch 2, there’s a tiny, clear lens. The purpose of this lens is still unclear, but it shares a striking resemblance with the laser sensors on computer mice. This similarity has sparked speculation that Joy-Cons might also function as mice, in addition to their traditional role as standalone controllers.
Ultimately, two additional accessories for the Nintendo Switch 2 were announced: a docking station and a combined Joy-Con controller. The combined controller seems to have undergone minor changes, mostly an increase in size. The updated dock resembles its predecessor, but specific modifications weren’t delved into during the trailer.
In the unveiling trailer for the Switch 2, it’s been hinted that it will be capable of playing some older Nintendo Switch games, although full compatibility may not be guaranteed. The message “Select Nintendo Switch titles may not run smoothly or work properly on Nintendo Switch 2” was shown, suggesting further information is forthcoming. Fans can look forward to a dedicated Nintendo Direct event on April 2, 2025, where we might learn more about the intriguing new console and its features.
