Summary
- The Switch 2 will have two USB-C ports.
- In addition to the bottom-facing port that’s already found on the original Switch, the upcoming console will also feature a top-facing USB-C slot.
- The top port will make the Switch 2 much more convenient to charge during handheld play and could even pave the way for some quirky accessories in the vein of the Game Boy Color Camera.
As an enthusiastic admirer, I’m thrilled about the inclusion of not one, but two USB Type-C ports on the upcoming Switch 2, as confirmed by Nintendo. This thoughtful design choice could undeniably enhance the user experience in many ways, making one potential scenario with the Switch 2 notably more convenient compared to its predecessor.
After several months of leaks that generally proved true, Nintendo finally unveiled its upcoming console on January 16th. The two-minute trailer primarily emphasized the design of the device and showcased key features, notably its backward compatibility with previous models.
The initial moments of the first Switch 2 promotional video provide a detailed view of the device from every angle. The trailer initially zeroes in on the console’s underside, highlighting the USB-C port similar to its predecessor. Subsequently, it reveals an identical slot positioned on the opposite side of the device. The new USB-C port is situated slightly rightward on the top side of the console, nestled between the 3.5mm jack on one side and cooling vents on the other.
Nintendo Switch 2 Should Be Convenient to Charge During Handheld Play
The new USB-C port located at the top of the upcoming console will enhance its usability during handheld mode, especially while charging it. Similar to other portable devices, the Switch 2 may be frequently used in various positions, such as on a lap or with its bottom resting on a surface like a bed, table, or chest. The original Switch had trouble charging when used this way—an issue that the new model aims to resolve, providing more versatile playing options.
Top-Facing USB-C Port Could Pave the Way For Switch 2 Attachments
As a gamer, I’ve found that the USB-C port at the top can open up a world of possibilities for my console, allowing me to use a variety of cool add-ons that enhance its capabilities just like Nintendo has done in the past with game-changing devices such as the Game Boy Color Camera, GBA e-Reader, DS Rumble Pak, and 3DS Circle Pad Pro. Even in this current Switch era, Nintendo continues to push boundaries with innovative experiments, evident in games like Nintendo Labo and Ring Fit Adventure, which utilize physical accessories to bring gaming to a whole new level.
Although the release date for the Switch 2 hasn’t been announced yet, a Nintendo Direct in April is anticipated, which could unveil additional information about the device. Some experts believe that Nintendo chose to hint at the console two and a half months prior to its dedicated Direct to give third-party publishers sufficient time to begin announcing Switch 2 games. A series of worldwide preview events has been planned from early April through June 1, suggesting that the console likely won’t be available in stores before June 2025 at the absolute latest.
