Regrettably, this violent behavior is becoming more common in connection with the acquisition of Pokemon TCG cards, which is unfortunate for the series.

These days, the trade of purchasing and re-selling Pokemon cards has become quite profitable. Cards that are incredibly rare, such as the Pikachu Illustrator, can fetch millions at auction. Even relatively newer cards often sell for hundreds or thousands online. Consequently, Pokemon cards tend to sell out quickly. The recent release of the Blooming Waters set for the Pokemon Trading Card Game has even sparked some scuffles in stores.

Recently, several videos have surfaced online depicting crowds storming into Costco stores, reminiscent of Black Friday shopping frenzies, due to a Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) buying spree. One clip captures a stampede-like entrance, while another shows a scuffle between two men over a desired set of cards. A third video features the same man in a hat pushing past others to reach the coveted cards and, in an attempt to escape a confrontation with a green-jacketed individual, elbows him in the face.

Pokemon TCG Retailers Big and Small Aren’t Immune

Regrettably, it’s not just large retailers like Costco dealing with this issue. Even smaller specialty stores have encountered unruly customers and theft. A recent post on social media showcased a store that was rammed by a Suburban, with the perpetrators making off with Pokemon Trading Card Game sets. This isn’t an isolated incident; thieves often target these stores for Pokemon cards. It seems this trend is unlikely to change soon.

Regrettably, this issue appears to be escalating and there seems to be no effective known resolution for it. Securing the cards isn’t beneficial if thieves are prepared to burglarize warehouses to pilfer Pokemon cards, disregarding anything in their path to reach them. As these cards lack unique identifiers such as serial numbers that could aid in tracing stolen cards, it’s virtually impossible for consumers to determine whether the collections they’re purchasing from a dealer are ill-gotten goods. Unless the value of Pokemon cards significantly decreases, it seems likely that these problems will persist.
