According to a trusted news outlet, Sony has decided to shelve two forthcoming live-service games from their exclusive lineup. This decision impacts both Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio, suggesting that Sony may be reducing its focus on live-service projects.
Initially, Sony held ambitious goals for their live-service games initiative with the start of the PS5 era in 2022, aiming to launch at least ten such games by 2026 from various PlayStation studios. Over time, however, this goal has been significantly scaled back due to multiple delays and cancellations that affected Sony’s first-party development teams. Among the most notable of these cancellations was the termination of Naughty Dog’s live-service project for “The Last of Us Online,” which ceased production in late 2023. Similar projects from other studios such as Firesprite, London Studio, Insomniac Games, and Bungie were also shelved.
Following the significant setback experienced by PlayStation’s live-service venture a few months after the Concord fiasco, another substantial blow has been dealt. Noted gaming insider Jason Schreier wrote a Bloomberg report indicating that PlayStation has scrapped two more live-service games, a claim later corroborated by a company representative. One of these abandoned projects was an unannounced open-world action game by Bend Studio, the creators of 2019’s Days Gone. The team initially confirmed they were developing this new intellectual property in June 2022, and recent leaks suggest that Bend Studio had been working on a third-person military shooter.
Every Canceled PlayStation Live-Service Game So Far
- Bend Studio: Open-world military shooter
- Bluepoint Games: God of War live-service game
- Bungie: Third person Destiny spin-off codenamed Payback
- Firesprite: Twisted Metal live-service game
- Firewalk Studios: Concord (shut down two weeks after launch and studio closed)
- Insomniac Games: Spider-Man live-service game
- London Studio: Co-op live-service game (studio closed)
- Naughty Dog: The Last of Us Online
A different project that Sony PlayStation decided to scrap was a God of War live-service title being developed by Bluepoint Games, the creators of beloved remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls. When Bluepoint joined PlayStation Studios in September 2021, they hinted at working on “new content,” raising hopes among fans who hoped for a fresh game instead of another remake. Many believed that Bluepoint might be developing an original project based on an existing PlayStation franchise, and it turns out this was indeed God of War. The release dates for these live-service games were not specified, but since they’ve been canceled now, fans will have to wait a considerable amount of time before hearing updates from Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games.
Fortunately, Sony has assured us that Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games won’t shut down, but it’s possible there will be redundancies in the future. The company is collaborating closely with both PlayStation studios to decide their upcoming projects. Since AAA game development is a lengthy process, these games might not be released until the PS6 era.
