In the series Sakamoto Days, numerous peers and acquaintances of Taro Sakamoto were taken aback when he unexpectedly declared his departure from his career as an assassin. Upon meeting his wife, Aoi, and welcoming a daughter into their family, Taro’s primary focus in life shifted to ensuring their safety and living a conventional existence. However, once one becomes a member of the Order, leaving isn’t always an option.

In the world of Sakamoto Days, I find him reluctant to revert to his past as an assassin, yet he’s compelled by circumstances to delve back into the underworld. Along with his associates Shin and Lu, he seems to be entangled once more. However, his primary concern now is not violence, but finding a means to safeguard his family from harm.

Why Did Sakamoto Quit as a Hitman?

Protecting His Family Life

In my own words, I, Taro Sakamoto, found myself yearning for change, not merely a switch in careers. For years, I had been immersed in the shadows, a skilled assassin since my tender age of 14, working alongside other professionals in this grim realm. However, fate had something different in store for me.

One fateful day, while carrying out an assignment at The Order, I crossed paths with Aoi, a simple girl working at a local convenience store. Her innocence captivated me, and before I knew it, I was smitten. As a hitman, my life was far from ordinary, yet here she was, a beacon of normality amidst the chaos. It became clear that I could not continue down this dark path with Aoi by my side.

After spending many years in a perilous line of work that frequently required him to end the lives of others, Aoi yearned for a change, aspiring to create a better future. She found it unacceptable for Sakamoto to persist in a vocation that involved taking lives, as it contradicted her deeply held moral beliefs. Smitten by Aoi and desiring to share his life with her, Sakamoto chose to leave behind his career as an assassin and embrace a peaceful, loving lifestyle with her instead. Additionally, he wished to guarantee Aoi’s safety, protecting her from the ever-present threats posed by the criminal underworld.

Life can take surprising twists, and it seems like I once walked the path of an assassin. Now, though, I derive happiness from preparing meals, keeping things tidy, and nurturing my loved ones. It’s a unique journey, filled with its own brand of excitement. (Attributed to Sakamoto)

In a bid to escape the grim reality of his past as an assassin, Sakamoto decided it was time for a change. This transformation became necessary as the job had become increasingly burdensome and filled with suffering and death. With the arrival of his daughter, Hana, into his life along with Aoi, he found a new purpose – providing her with a typical upbringing alongside loving parents. At last, Sakamoto was able to pursue his personal values and live according to his own principles while enjoying the company of his new family, far removed from the perilous world of hitmanship. Yet, his former apprentice, Shin, unexpectedly resurfaced, dragging him back into the very life he had been trying to flee.

Why Has Sakamoto Returned?

Sakamoto’s Return to a Life of Danger

The next time Shin encounters Sakamoto, he’s given the challenging assignment of eliminating a renowned ex-assassin, as per the instructions from the Guild. Yet, Sakamoto was once Shin’s mentor, and he respects him deeply. However, this task isn’t something he desires, but he feels compelled to carry it out due to necessity. In their confrontation, however, Shin is swiftly overpowered by Sakamoto, and is subsequently taken home, tended to, and bandaged up. As he observes Sakamto’s transformation and his dedication to his family, Shin decides to spare them any further trouble. Surprisingly, Sakamoto offers him a home and allows him to work at his convenience store whenever it suits him best.

Despite giving Shin shelter at the store and collaborating with him, there’s an ongoing threat on Sakamoto that persists. This is because he had to flee from the organization, which pursues him due to his departure, forcing him back into a realm of violence. However, it’s not about seeking conflict; it’s about protecting himself and his family from imminent danger. Even though he attempted to leave this violent past behind, its residue lingers, particularly since the Order doesn’t permit people to depart. Moreover, as a renowned assassin, Sakamoto can’t simply disappear or go into hiding effortlessly.

True strength can take various shapes. It’s not just about physical might, but rather the ability to safeguard what truly matters to you that truly defines a person. (Sakamoto)

Despite Sakamoto not resuming his role as an active hitman, he’s compelled to engage with figures from the underworld he once worked with and protect himself in a manner reminiscent of his past. His inability to depart from the Order has left many seeking him out because his unparalleled abilities still pose a potential threat. Additionally, they may be interested in his secret knowledge that no one else possesses. Some are simply eager to test their skills against his or persuade him to join their ranks, an offer he consistently declines as he strives to maintain harmony in his family life.

Since resuming ties with old associates such as Lu and Shin, it’s proving challenging for Sakamoto to fully escape his hitman past, despite not being actively engaged in the criminal underworld. While striving to maintain a peaceful existence for those close to him, he employs innovative, non-violent tactics to neutralize threats against himself, yet they seem persistently present, relentlessly tracking him down.

Sakamoto Days is available to stream on Netflix.
