9 groups have been selected for the Overwatch Champions Series partnership program. Some of these teams may be recognized by veteran competitive Overwatch enthusiasts, but quite a few teams that were previously key figures in the scene are now missing from it.
As the open Overwatch esports scene ushers in a fresh chapter, and with a new contender emerging as a threat to the game, this year holds significant importance for Blizzard’s renowned hero-based shooter.
Meet the OWCS Partner Teams
As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that nine teams have been extended an invitation to join the OWCS partner program for 2025! The breakdown is as follows: four powerhouse teams from Asia, three from the dynamic duo of Europe and the Middle East (EMEA), and two high-performing teams hailing from North America. The regional distribution isn’t determined by where the organizations are headquartered, but rather by the roster composition of the players.
Being a partner team comes with some exciting perks! We’re talking a share of the earnings from in-game merchandise sporting our favorite teams’ themes, and direct invitations to the stage one main event in our respective regions. This is a fantastic opportunity for these teams to shine on a global stage!
The list of partnered teams includes:
- Gen.G (EMEA)
- Twisted Minds (EMEA)
- Virtus.pro (EMEA)
- Spacestation (North America)
- Team Liquid (North America)
- Crazy Raccoon (Asia)
- T1 (Asia)
- Team Falcons (Asia)
- ZETA DIVISION (Asia)
From the original nine organizations, just two were operational during the time of the Overwatch League: T1 served as the training team for the previously known Philadelphia Fusion (now Seoul Infernal), and Gen.G controlled the Seoul Dynasty. A number of these currently allied teams debuted in Overwatch last year, joining the open OWCS ecosystem following the shutdown of the Overwatch League towards the end of 2023.
The list omits several prominent organizations that thrived during the OWL era, including NRG, who managed the two-time OWL champion San Francisco Shock. Interestingly, NRG was not offered a partner program invite, leaving both NRG employees and devoted OWL followers bewildered, particularly given that NRG finished 4th in the OWCS 2024 World Finals as the NRG Shock. This decision has left fans somewhat taken aback, especially since one of the NA slots is already filled by a Team Liquid organization that last competed in Overwatch back in 2017. The scarcity of NA slots might be puzzling to some, given this circumstance.
There’s been a fresh surge of enthusiasm in the world of Overwatch esports due to the shift from the franchised OWL to open OWCS. The 2024 OWCS Finals attracted a slightly larger audience than the 2023 OWL Finals did. Yet, Overwatch now finds itself against its most formidable competitor yet – Marvel Rivals, freshly launched by NetEase. Although Marvel Rivals is gradually getting into esports, several ex-Overwatch pros have already switched teams.
