U.S. “Sailor Moon” enthusiasts can catch an official live stage show in March! While it’s typical for anime or manga series like “Sailor Moon” to have stage performances in Japan, these events rarely travel overseas. This is partly due to language barriers and the fact that the DVDs of these presentations, which could be subtitled, are seldom sold outside Japan.

A potential explanation is that the licensing fees for distributing those DVDs/Blu-rays are excessively high relative to projected sales figures. However, fans of Sailor Moon in the US and UK have reason to celebrate this year. Given its partnership with Ayumi Hamasaki, this franchise has a broad reach and potential for success in other markets as well.

The stage show “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Super Musical” is inspired by the original comic book. In February and March of next year, it will be staged not only in Japan but also in London and various cities across the United States. The dialogue will be delivered in Japanese, but don’t worry, English subtitles will be provided for easy understanding. This is actually its second run in the US; it previously debuted in Washington, DC, and New York City back in March 2019.

Sailor Moon The Super Live

Back in 2018, I had the incredible opportunity to bring my creation, a performance inspired by “The Prince of Tennis,” to life in Japan. As the writer (both book and lyrics), as well as the director, it was an honor to be part of this journey from conception to reality. The choreography was masterfully crafted by Satomi Toma, while Go Sakabe and KOHEI brought the performance to life with their exceptional compositions.

From my vantage point, I’m observing a performance described as a “2.5D musical experience.” It appears to be an interpretation of a manga, but let me clarify, it’s not quite as adorable as it may seem at first glance. This production doesn’t stem from an original narrative; instead, it’s based on previously published work.

On the British site, Animecon 25, Crunchyroll, and Artbox are acknowledged as collaborators; however, none are credited as partners on the American version.
