A Special Frieren Novella
A New Short Story for Fans
For those who have been keeping up with the Frieren manga for some time now, they might have come across one of Mei Hachimoku’s works already. Interestingly, this author penned a prequel novel for the series titled “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End the Novel ~Prelude~” (also known as “Shōsetsu Sōsō no Frieren ~Zensō~”). This was a 24-page novella, set before the regular Frieren manga begins, and it narrated five previously unheard tales. It was made available for reading in April 2024. Mei Hachimoku is also renowned as the author of the light novel “The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbye.
The newly announced Frieren novella, titled “Magic to Make Flowers Bloom in the Sky,” will span 24 pages. At this point, no specific details about the plot have been disclosed. However, it’s set for release alongside the 14th volume of the main Frieren novel. Given that Kanehito Yamada, the creator of Frieren, is overseeing the project, quality is anticipated to be top-notch.
A Special Edition of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
A Little Something Extra
In addition to the unique novella “Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō,” found within the 14th volume of Frieren, this exclusive edition will also encompass three fresh illustrations crafted by Tsukasa Abe, the manga’s artist. Moreover, it boasts a distinctive hardback cover, imbuing it with an authentic grimoire feel, as per AnimeNewsNetwork’s reporting.
The manga titled “Frieren,” crafted by Kanehito Yamada with art by Tsukasa Abe, has been serialized since April 2020 in Shogakukan’s “Weekly Shonen Sunday.” Starting from November 2021, it has also been made available in English through Viz Media. Since then, it has been transformed into an anime that premiered in September 2023 and remarkably holds the top rating among all anime on MyAnimeList. There are plans for a second season to be released at some point in the future.
MyAnimeList describes Frieran: Beyond Journey’s Edge as,
After vanquishing the Demon King, the heroic group triumphantly returns home and subsequently disbands. Comprised of mage Frieren, hero Himmel, priest Heiter, and warrior Eisen, they take a moment to reflect on their ten-year adventure as the time comes for them to part ways. However, being an elf, Frieren notices that her comrades begin to fade away gradually, one by one.
Prior to his demise, Heiter arranges for a young human apprentice named Fern to be under the care of Frieren. Spurred by the elf’s fascination with gathering numerous magical spells, the duo embarks on an apparently purposeless journey, retracing paths that legendary heroes once trod in days gone by. During their travels, Frieren gradually faces her remorse over lost chances to forge stronger connections with her late companions.
It’s still unclear when exactly the new Frieren novella will be available in English, but given its popularity worldwide and the ongoing release of manga chapters in English, it’s likely that an English translation will follow closely after the Japanese release. So, eager fans might not have to wait much longer to enjoy reading Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō.
On March 18th, a unique version of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Volume 14, which features the novella Blooming Magic in the Sky, will be available for purchase.
Why not dive into “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” on Crunchyroll right away if you’re an anime lover? And for those who prefer a good read, don’t forget to check out the manga from Viz Media!
