Summary
- Trump plans to delay the TikTok ban by 90 days upon reentering office to work on a solution with the app’s CEO.
- The TikTok CEO praises Trump for agreeing to work together, aiming for long-term maintenance of the app.
- The long-term future of the app remains uncertain.
On the eve of President-Elect Donald Trump’s second term inauguration, it appears his efforts to preserve video-based social media platform TikTok – an app he previously aimed to ban while in office – are progressing. A rally set for the day before the swearing-in ceremony may host some of his supporters, with reports suggesting TikTok’s CEO will also be present among them.
On the evening of January 18th in the USA, TikTok momentarily shut down, just hours before a national ban on the app, as ordered by Congress, was about to be implemented. Despite many American users anticipating their farewell to TikTok, several features of the app resumed functioning mysteriously, less than 24 hours later.
According to CNN, Trump intends to sign an order on his inauguration day that delays a previously planned ban by 90 days. Meanwhile, TikTok has been working to reactivate its app for American users. In spring 2024, Congress voted in favor of banning the app nationwide if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, didn’t sell it by January 19, 2025. Despite this decision, ByteDance still owns TikTok and has been trying to challenge it through the courts. However, a recent ruling by the Supreme Court upholding the TikTok ban seemed final, but Trump’s intervention may have changed that course of action.
TikTok is Working on a Long-Term Solution with Trump
In 2020, Trump signed an executive order aiming to prohibit TikTok, but a federal judge temporarily halted it, and later, under the Biden administration, it was reversed. Interestingly, while campaigning in 2024, Trump publicly opposed Congress’ bipartisan attempt to re-enforce the ban on TikTok. Lately, both current President Biden and President-elect Trump appear to have softened their stance, with Biden declaring he wouldn’t implement the ban set for his last day in office, and Trump now seemingly collaborating closely with TikTok’s executive team.
The CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, has thanked President-elect Trump for his commitment to keep the app operational. Chew expressed this gratitude in a video on TikTok, which was posted before the app went offline across the U.S. He emphasized that Trump’s support is a significant step towards safeguarding free speech and resisting censorship. Although many videos are currently unavailable, Chew’s message praising Trump can still be viewed. Chew suggests that he and Trump have long-term goals for ensuring TikTok remains accessible nationwide, but it’s uncertain whether this will still necessitate ByteDance selling the app.
