Ever since Pokemon Pocket debuted, the Metal archetype hasn’t exactly been a crowd favorite among types. I’ve given it a shot numerous times, trying to craft competitive decks around it, but more often than not, I find myself falling short. The metagame remains unchanged, and a truly victorious Metal-type deck is still nowhere to be found.

Despite what’s been said, there’s still plenty of opportunity for innovation! Notably, Metal decks, especially those enhanced with Mythical Island cards, have demonstrated promise. In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through constructing two such decks, leveraging the fresh cards from Pokemon Pocket to compensate for the archetype’s somewhat weak statistics.

The Best Metal Deck in the Current Meta

To create a reliable Metal-type Pokemon deck, choose only three Pokemon: Meltan, Melmetal, and Druddigon. Use Meltan for Energy acceleration, employ Druddigon for stalling, and inflict damage with Melmetal. The remaining slots in the deck should be filled with Trainer Cards to enhance draw speed.

The Best Experimental Metal Deck

In recent competitions, a fresh Metal deck, known as the “Melmetal-Greninja setup,” has emerged and surprised many opponents who play meta decks. This deck is backed by Druddigon, and it’s one of the most promising configurations for the Metal category.

The strategy behind this deck setup is straightforward: Position Druddigon at the forefront to delay opponents. Gradually strengthen Meltan, transforming it into Melmetal. When Melmetal is prepared to strike, initiate damage. Simultaneously, maintain Greninja on the sidelines to contribute extra damage, compensating for Melmetal’s relatively weak offensive capabilities.

In this setup, you won’t have to incorporate Water-type Energy cards into your Melmetal & Greninja deck, because Greninja remains on the bench and uses its energy-less ability to inflict minor damage instead.

Current Performance of Metal Decks in Pocket’s Meta

I examined ten recent Pokemon Pocket tournaments, concentrating on the number of players employing a Metal deck. My findings reveal that Metal-based strategies were used in approximately 40% of contests, and these decks typically ranked around 66.2 overall. To put it simply, Metal decks rarely placed within the top 50.

Among tournaments I’ve recently analyzed, only one saw a Melmetal deck perform competitively, finishing in 12th position. In every other instance, metal decks I examined either surrendered or ended up ranking lower than 40th.

Why Metal Decks Have Failed in Pocket’s Meta

In the current gameplay of Pokemon Pocket, there are two significant problems with the Metal archetype:

1) The number of available Metal-type Pokemon is quite limited, and
2) Few Pokemon are vulnerable to Metal, and none of them are popular choices in the meta. This results in a restricted set of options for deck building and a lack of type advantage, which often leads to the failure of Metal decks due to this scarcity.

With the forthcoming expansions, there’s a possibility that Metal-type decks might become more common. The new cards might solve two problems: they may introduce more balanced Metal Pokémon for the game meta, as well as additional Pokémon that are weak to Metal, impacting the overall strategy in the game.

How to Counter Metal Decks

In the present competitive scene, all Pokemon made of metal in your Pocket are vulnerable to decks based on Fire-type Pokemon.
