Note: The information that follows may reveal plot points from the Dragon Ball Super manga. You can currently watch Dragon Ball on Crunchyroll.

In the Dragon Ball series, Gohan spent significantly more time under the tutelage of Piccolo the Namekian than with his Saiyan father, Goku. Despite their strong bond, it’s the unique dynamic between student and teacher that truly stands out in their storyline. When it comes to action-packed shonen anime with a lot of combat, it’s common for characters who are close to each other to collaborate – like they do through team attacks. One of the most impressive team moves between Gohan and Piccolo is the Masenko Beam Cannon.

It’s likely that devoted Dragon Ball fans would recognize that the name of the Masenko Beam Cannon is simply a fusion of the Masenko and the Special Beam Cannon. In truth, this is accurate, as many other joint attacks in the series share this naming pattern. Piccolo is responsible for inventing both moves: the Masenko is an energy wave attack where the user places their hands on their forehead with palms facing forward before firing a ki beam towards their target upon thrusting their hands forward. The Special Beam Cannon, however, was designed by Piccolo to defeat Goku and requires him to focus his ki through two fingers while placing them on his forehead. After channeling the energy, he points his fingers at the target, releasing two beams – one moving straight ahead while another spirals around it. Each of these attacks is powerful individually, but when combined, they can create a significant amount of damage for anyone unfortunate enough to be in their path.

What Is the Masenko Beam Cannon?

A Move Made to Beat an Enemy Neither of Them Could Beat Alone

Previously stated, the Masenko Beam Cannon is a fusion of the Masenko and the Special Beam Cannon. Gohan prepares the Masenko, while Piccolo readies the Special Beam Cannon. However, instead of emitting two beams, Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon now releases one beam that spins around Gohan’s Masenko. In essence, the Masenko Beam Cannon resembles a regular Special Beam Cannon, except for the straight-moving beam being a Masenko.

In the original storyline, the Masenko Beam Cannon has been depicted in the manga but not yet in the anime, as it appears post-Tournament of Power. The characters Gohan and Piccolo used this cannon against Seven-Three in chapter 56 of Dragon Ball Super, titled “Warriors of Earth Assemble”. Seven-Three, an android with the ability to perfectly mimic any fighter’s moves, has an advantage due to his limitless ki and ability to tire out opponents by matching their moves until they exhaust. To combat this, Gohan and Piccolo join forces and launch a series of attacks that Seven-Three can’t replicate because he can only copy one person at a time. One such attack is the Masenko Beam Cannon.

Absolutely! Combination Maneuvers! Given that Seven-Three can activate only one power source at once, it’s impossible for him to evade simultaneous attacks from a pair like Gohan and Piccolo. – Jaco, moments before they fired the Masenko Beam Cannon.

Other Versions of the Masenko Beam Cannon

Several Dragon Ball video games incorporate the Masenko Beam Cannon as a playable ability, but the execution varies from game to game compared to how it was portrayed in the comics.

  • Supersonic Warriors 2 has the move as Gohan and Piccolo’s team attack, except this time, it’s performed by Teen Super Saiyan 2 Gohan with Piccolo. In the game, the attack is simply called Special Beam Cannon, even though Gohan is obviously putting his hands on his forehead in the iconic Masenko pose. The attack is also all green instead of a yellow beam with a purple spiral.
  • Dragon Ball Fusions has a different interpretation of the attack altogether. Instead of it being a team attack performed by two people, it’s just one person using a single unique attack that’s a combination of the Masenko and Special Beam Cannon.
  • Dragon Ball Legends also has the Masenko Beam Cannon, but it isn’t limited to just the Gohan and Piccolo duo. Any Masenko Special Move Arts user paired with a Special Beam Cannon Special Move Arts user can perform the attack.

Other Gohan and Piccolo Combo Moves

Their Team Attacks Mostly Appear in Video Games

Action-packed video games inspired by anime frequently introduce novel attack moves to maintain exciting combat sequences. Just like any other, Dragon Ball games feature a wealth of combo attacks designed specifically for characters such as Gohan and Piccolo.

  • Demon Cannon (Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans) – Piccolo starts with a flurry of melee attacks that ends with the opponent bashed into a wall. Gohan then follows up with a Masenko to finish them off.
  • Meteor Impact (Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans) – This one’s special because it’s not just Gohan and Piccolo; Goku joins in on this combo attack too. Gohan performs his Burst Rush, Goku follows up with a Meteor Combination, and Piccolo ends it with a Special Beam Cannon.
  • Another Hope (Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle) – This is another attack performed by a trio of Gohan, Piccolo, and Goku, but this time, it’s the one-armed Future Gohan. Another Hope is basically Future Gohan’s version of the Father-Son Kamehameha. He fires a One-Handed Kamehameha, which is boosted by his emotions for his father and Piccolo.
  • Evil Shot (Supersonic Warriors 2) – Kid Gohan and Piccolo take turns striking their opponent, with the combo ending with Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon.
  • Master and Disciple Special Beam Cannon (Xenoverse 2 and Dokkan Battle) – Beast Gohan and Orange Piccolo each charge up a Special Beam Cannon side by side. They then fire simultaneously, resulting in a massive blue Special Beam Cannon that can be seen well beyond Earth. They used this move to defeat Cell Max in the game, but didn’t use it in the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie.

Dragon Ball is now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
