In the second season of “Squid Game”, many fresh characters have been introduced, yet it continues to captivate audiences. One of these newcomers has revealed the unexpected manner in which they landed their part.

In 2021, Squid Game became a huge success when it was released on Netflix. Since many of the cast members were characters who perished in the first season, several fresh faces appeared for the series’ second installment. One such newcomer was Park Gyu-young, who portrayed Kang No-eul, or Guard 11. She has recently revealed her journey to securing a role she hadn’t anticipated playing.

Park, originally a North Korean defector, found herself unexpectedly cast as one of the masked soldiers in a deadly tournament. Her motivation was to earn enough money to be reunited with her daughter. In an interview with Deadline, she shared that she had gone through two audition rounds without knowing what role she would assume. During these auditions, she read numerous lines but wasn’t informed of the character until after the second round with the director and creator. It was then that she received the script and learned she would be playing the soldier role, dressed in a pink uniform. Before joining this South Korean survival thriller, Park had previously appeared in “Sweet Home” and “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay”.

Fans of Squid Game had several theories when they spotted Guy-young in promotional materials before the second season debuted. This was because, unlike many new characters, she wasn’t dressed in the standard green jumpsuit, hinting that she wasn’t among the new players. Instead, fans speculated that she would be one of the guards, which turned out to be true. However, there’s a surprising twist to her character: she mercilessly kills the players who fail to find relief from their suffering. Later in the series, it was revealed that some of the guards were involved in illegal organ trafficking by harvesting organs from incapacitated yet alive players. As a result, Guy-young continues to kill wounded players to prevent any further abuse and exploitation.

Gyu-young, like many actors, isn’t unfamiliar with auditions as they are often required for lead or significant roles. The process usually involves displaying skills through screen tests, reading specific scripts, and delivering monologues. Smaller roles and extras may require fewer auditions, but directors might still request one or two callbacks. No-eul’s introduction in Squid Game Season 2 was a refreshing change because the guards’ stories were not explored in the first season. Her narrative became the first to focus on a masked guard’s background.

The second season of “Squid Game” unexpectedly concluded following its seventh episode. Character number 11 survived and could reappear in Season 3. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has been working on both seasons 2 and 3 concurrently, deciding to stop at episode 7 as it represented a significant turning point. Indeed, this decision was justified since it left viewers astonished while simultaneously leaving them eager for more. Previously, Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, had stated that the final season would provide answers to the audience’s unresolved questions. Thankfully, fans won’t have a long wait, as “Squid Game” Season 3 is set to debut this year.
