The gradual introduction of the new ruleset for Dungeons and Dragons in 2024 has been a treasure trove of fresh content for enthusiasts, inviting them to explore and innovate. The Player’s Handbook has significantly overhauled class structures, species, and backgrounds; the Dungeon Master’s Guide has enriched the game by introducing new magic items and rules for crafting and base construction; while the Monster Manual promises to simplify combat encounter design upon its release on February 18. A delightful bonus for many gamers, recent playtest materials for the 2024 rules have also revamped one of Dungeons & Dragons 5e’s most distinctive classes.

In December last year, it was revealed that the Artificer character class would make a comeback in the game through Unearthed Arcana. The Artificer is a type of inventor who relies on their intelligence to craft mechanical devices and magic items for use during their adventures. Alongside the Wizard, the Artificer represents the second Intelligence-based caster in the game. This new addition to the roster of classes will bring welcome diversity to the playstyles available in D&D 2024. As it stands, characters who focus on Intelligence are relatively rare due to the fact that Strength, Wisdom, Dexterity, and Charisma each serve as the main attribute for multiple other classes. After the Artificer has been fully tested, Wizards of the Coast might want to develop a class centered around an underutilized ability score.

Giving Constitution More Attention in D&D 2024

In the game Dungeons and Dragons, the Constitution ability score is often a focus for players but seems to be overlooked by its designers. Enhancing a character’s Constitution significantly impacts combat-focused classes such as paladins, barbarians, and fighters because it determines their hit points. Since Constitution is deeply tied into a character’s overall statistics and the frequent occurrence of Constitution saving throws in typical adventures, Dungeons and Dragons places great importance on this ability score for every class in the game.

Among all the ability scores in the game, Constitution stands out as the most tranquil one, requiring minimal active engagement. Unlike other abilities, Constitution doesn’t influence a character’s skill bonuses, attack rolls, or the power of spells – instead, it solely factors into determining a character’s hit points and the modifier for saving throws related to Constitution and concentration. This makes Constitution a crucial ability score, yet one that may not offer much gratification for those who opt to focus on it.

How a Constitution-Focused Class Could Make Big Waves

In Dungeons & Draggs, some tank classes naturally prioritize high Constitution scores, but they tend to lean on other attributes to carry out their functions. For instance, Paladins, Barbarians, and Fighters usually exhibit a strong focus on Strength above all else. Additionally, Charisma plays a significant role for Paladins, while Dexterity serves as the primary attack modifier in certain Fighter character builds.

One idea for diversifying combat dynamics and highlighting the Constitution stat could involve introducing a distinct tank class, unlike existing classes focusing predominantly on damage per second (DPS). Instead of serving as a semi-tank, this new class would specialize in attracting enemy attention and taking damage on behalf of teammates.

In addition to the class inherently requiring hit points equivalent to those provided by a high Constitution score, WOTC might consider integrating the Constitution score into the combat abilities as well. For instance, envision a character who serves as a formidable fortress in battle, utilizing their Constitution to attract enemy attacks, incapacitate foes rather than merely harming them, and grant AC bonuses to companions. This would transform Constitution from a stat that players feel compelled to invest in due to obligation, into one that is genuinely appealing and intriguing.

In 2024, D&D could profit from expanding the variety of its classes, and the development of a Constitution-focused class could be an effective approach to achieve this diversity.
