Electronic Arts has made an announcement that they will cease operation of their Origin platform on April 17, 2025. This may cause disappointment among some users, as Origin, though not overly popular, still serves a niche group of gamers. Particularly, those who use 32-bit computers might find this news troubling since they won’t be able to utilize the newer EA App after that date.

Since 2011, I’ve been gaming on Origin, Electronic Arts’ very own digital distribution hub for PC games. It wasn’t everyone’s first choice back then, but it had some exclusive titles that were hard to resist, especially all of EA’s top-notch games from 2011 to 2018. These gems helped Origin carve out a niche for itself among the gaming community.

However, things started shifting in 2019 with the arrival of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order on Steam. Then, in 2022, EA rolled out the new EA App, designed to take over from Origin. But here’s the twist – while the EA App demands a 64-bit computer, my old 32-bit gaming rig can still run Origin smoothly. So, for now, both platforms coexist in my gaming world.

Starting from April 17th, EA has announced that its platform Origin will be closed down. To keep playing your games, you’ll need to switch over to the EA App. The reason behind this closure is that Microsoft no longer supports older 32-bit software. To continue using the EA App, gamers should upgrade their operating systems to Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit versions) and install the new app, making sure to log in with the same account. The good news is that if you’ve enabled cloud saves, your saved data will be automatically transferred to the EA App. However, be aware that some mods might cease functioning after the transition, according to EA.

For some users of old 32-bit computers, they’ll find it difficult to access the EA App as a change is being made, since their systems won’t support it. Unfortunately, there’s no solution known for this issue, which means that these gamers may need to buy new PCs if they wish to keep playing their previously purchased EA games. However, EA has been making more of its games available on Steam in recent times, so those bought through Steam will still be playable on 32-bit systems.

In addition to the service it’s closing down in 2025, Electronic Arts (EA) has also announced that it will be shutting down the servers for at least 13 games this year. Among these are popular titles such as Madden NFL 21, which will be turned off on June 30. The majority of these games, including The Simpsons: Tapped Out, Blood and Glory Immortals, Contract Killer: Sniper, Deer Hunter Classic, Dino Hunter: Deadly Shores, Eternity Warriors 4, Frontline Commando 2, and Frontline Commando: D-Day, will be closed on January 29.
