Frame Generation (FG) was initially presented for the Nvidia RTX 40-series GPUs, leveraging AI to boost frame generation and thereby increase FPS in numerous games. Unfortunately, this technology was exclusive to the RTX 40-series GPUs. However, AMD managed to develop a comparable technology that could be utilized with even older RTX 20 and 30-series Nvidia graphics cards.
In the near future, it’s possible that Nvidia will introduce support for Frame Generation (FG) in their RTX 30-series GPUs, making them competitive even amidst the emergence of the RTX 50-series, which natively supports this feature and other advanced Nvidia technologies. At present, there is no definitive timeline, but prospects appear promising.
Frame Generation Potentially on RTX 30-series GPUs
In an interview at CES 2025 by Digital Foundry, Nvidia’s Vice President of Applied Deep Learning Research, Bryan Catanzaro, mentioned that Nvidia may still consider adding FG (FidelityFX Super Resolution) support for RTX 30-series GPUs.
When questioned regarding why FG hasn’t been utilizing the given GPUs, Catanzaro explained as follows:

Catanzaro clarified the reason behind FG not using the provided GPUs when asked about it.

In response to a query about why FG isn’t making use of those GPUs, Catanzaro elaborated on the cause.

When inquired as to why FG wasn’t working with the given GPUs, Catanzaro shared his thoughts on the matter.
This issue seems to mainly revolve around optimization, engineering, and delivering an exceptional user experience. That’s why we’re introducing advanced multi-frame generation technology with our 50-series, and we plan to maximize performance on older hardware as well in the future.
As a dedicated cinephile of the digital screen, it seems there’s a tantalizing hint that the tech giant might be working on something intriguing for us gamers running games on older Nvidia graphics processors – primarily the RTX 30-series, but potentially extending to the RTX 20-series as well. However, let’s keep in mind this isn’t a definitive statement, but if it pans out, it could significantly enhance our gaming FPS!
It’s unclear when users might get their hands on this technology, as interest in it may have waned by then. Previously discussed, AMD’s AFMF or AMD Fluid Motion Frames, which serves as a counterpart to Nvidia’s Frame Generation tech, is compatible with RTX 20 and 30-series GPUs, and surprisingly, also with the older RTX 10-series cards. While it’s not flawless, it does function effectively.

Initially, Nvidia’s DLSS 4 suite, encompassing multi-frame generation, ray reconstruction, super resolution, and Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA), is expected to be partially implemented on Nvidia RTX 20, 30, and 40-series GPUs. Notably, the frame generation aspect will not be available for RTX 20 and 30-series cards. However, a recent interview suggests potential modifications and enhancements in this area.
It’s common knowledge that older Nvidia GPUs have hardware restrictions that prevent them from using advanced technologies like frame generation. However, there might be a method to get around these constraints. Interestingly, AMD initially intended for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) to only work with the newest RDNA 4 GPUs, but they later suggested that they may optimize the technology to be compatible with RDNA 3 architecture as well.
No matter when the development occurs, this positive update benefits owners of older Nvidia graphics cards since they might delay an upgrade for some time. This prolongation offers them the chance to extract additional performance, enhancing the worthiness of their initial investment.
