As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon learning that Doctor Otto Octavius hinted at the sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as the “final chapter.” The thought of exploring all the intriguing character introductions, teases, and developments in multiple games was quite enticing. However, if Insomniac Games sticks to their word, it seems that Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 will be responsible for tying up all loose ends and providing a satisfying conclusion. It’s a bit disheartening to think about the potential stories that could have been spun in the Insomniac Spider-Man universe if the series weren’t coming to an end, or at least not ending so soon.
Example: Symbiotes have recently gained significant power – currently, Peter Parker is equipped with an Anti-Venom symbiote, while Cletus Kasady made a striking entrance in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Insomniac carefully built up to this impressive debut by introducing a violent cult, which led their Spider-Man franchise into a more ominous territory. With Otto Octavius plotting from the Raft since the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man and a potential return as a future antagonist, Insomniac has several avenues to present their own versions of Monster-Ock or Atrocity if they choose to do so.
How Marvel’s Spider-Man Lays a Foundation for Monster-Ock
In simpler terms, Monster-Ock is a character born from the fusion of Doctor Octopus and Carnage’s red symbiote, first introduced in the 2000 version of Spider-Man developed by Neversoft and Activision. Monster-Ock is a ferocious beast with terrifying growls, constantly chasing Spider-Man. Despite not being particularly imposing physically, as he’s only slightly larger than Spider-Man, the fear he instills comes from the challenging experience of maneuvering through tight, confined spaces while being pursued by Monster-Ock. This design was innovative but unfortunately never recreated exactly in subsequent games.
In the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, it’s possible that Cletus’ symbiote might attach itself to Otto, but given how heavily Carnage has been hinted at, it seems unlikely that both Carnage and Monster-Ock would feature prominently in the same way they did in Spider-Man. The focus on Carnage, with its red symbiote and Cletus as its host, is expected to be significant. While a Monster-Ock appearance would be exciting, especially now that a red symbiote has been introduced, there might not be space for it in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 due to the need to set up the Green Goblin, who is highly anticipated.
How Marvel’s Spider-Man Lays a Foundation for Atrocity
In contrast, Atrocity is a formidable creature introduced in Beenox and Activision’s Spider-Man: Edge of Time, comprising Doctor Octopus, Anti-Venom with Eddie Brock as its host, and Walker Sloan. This monstrous figure exhibits an alien-like appearance, characterized by a swollen body, an imposing arm, a drooping tongue hanging from its mouth, and small red eyes resembling Doctor Octopus’ goggles.
Instead of just portraying a host-symbiote dynamic similar to Monster-Ock, the character Atrocity arises when all three individuals accidentally pass through the time-travel portal in Edge of Time.
In Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, there’s a possibility that Peter’s Anti-Venom symbiote could attach itself to Otto, regardless of whether a third host is part of the monstrosity’s fusion or not. However, considering the significant role Atrocity plays as a recurring antagonist in Spider-Man: Edge of Time, it might be wiser to preserve its distinctive design and appearance for that game to maintain its uniqueness.
In a unique and specific sense, an atrocity is hard to recreate under drastically changed conditions, even hinting at it with Doctor Octopus and the Anti-Venom symbiote could be delightful and reminiscent in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. Regardless, it will be intriguing to discover what Insomniac has planned for Peter’s symbiote, along with any other symbiotes that may still be present, whenever Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 finally arrives.
