Summary
- The Horizon MMORPG has reportedly been canceled in late 2024.
- Code-named Project H, the MMO game is said to have been in development at NCSoft since at least late 2022.
- Sony is understood to have canceled the project following a viability review. Guerrilla’s own Horizon multiplayer game is still believed to be in the works.
It appears that Sony has indeed called off the speculated Horizon MMO, as recent findings seem to indicate. The project, which was believed to have been put on hold, is thought to be the only Horizon title not being developed by Guerrilla Games, the Dutch studio responsible for creating the franchise.
In November 2022, a well-known South Korean gaming outlet MTN announced that NCSoft, one of the country’s largest game developers and publishers, was developing a new MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) internally codenamed “Project H.” Although neither Sony nor NCSoft confirmed this report officially, since then, the South Korean developer has been advertising job openings related to “Project H.
It appears that NCSoft’s hiring for Project H has come to a halt, as reported by MTN in mid-January 2024. The project’s cancellation is believed to have been initiated by Sony, with the company deciding to scrap it following a recent assessment of its viability. Reports suggest that this decision was made towards the end of 2024, and those working on the game started receiving notice about the development and new assignments in early 2025. It’s worth noting that around the same time, Sony also reportedly canceled two other live-service games: a multiplayer God of War title from Bluepoint and an unspecified project from Bend Studio.
Sony Reportedly Canceled Over 10 Live-Service Games in 3 Years
In 2024, it’s believed that Project H was Sony’s sixth game that was halted as part of their ongoing projects. Besides the unexpected closure of Concord in August 2024, reports suggest that Sony also cancelled a spin-off of Destiny by Bungie (codenamed Payback), an unnamed London Studio fantasy game, a Neon Koi project without a title, and a new live-service Twisted Metal game that was being developed at Firesprite in February 2024.

A Horizon Multiplayer Game Is Still Said to Be on the Horizon
Although it was rumored that Project H was canceled, there’s a possibility that the Horizon series might yet see a live-service game in the near future. This could be the multiplayer Horizon game that Guerrilla Games is developing, a fact confirmed by the studio towards the end of 2022. Reports indicate that this project may have begun development as early as 2018, hinted at by Guerrilla’s job vacancies.
Based on Game Rant’s mid-2024 analysis of some job postings from Guerrilla, it appears that the multiplayer version of Horizon might be aiming for a launch on PlayStation 6 (PS6), potentially bypassing the PS5 entirely. Sony’s upcoming console generation is projected to debut anywhere between late 2027 and late 2028.
