Summary
- Amazon may revive Jerry Edgar spin-off after Ballard to cut costs and keep Bosch-verse going.
- Amazon lacks faith in expanding the Bosch universe, treating shows like sequels while keeping costs down.
- Ballard to launch in Fall 2025, and it might be followed by Jerry Edgar with reduced guest roles and a new supporting cast.
Last year, apart from Bosch: Legacy, Amazon also scrapped another highly anticipated spin-off, Jerry Edgar’s, before filming even began on the spin-off series. This left only the Ballard spin-off standing among Michael Connelly’s crime saga shows that were progressing at Amazon. But when Ballard eventually concludes, there might be a possibility for the Jerry Edgar spin-off to be reborn again.
It seems that Amazon was not very interested in backing the series Bosch: Legacy, Ballard and Jerry Edgar, as they envisioned a large-scale universe where all shows would run simultaneously. Instead, their strategy appears to be about cost-cutting by airing Ballard separately. If Ballard underperforms or becomes too expensive, they plan to introduce the Jerry Edgar spin-off instead.
Amazon Will Probably Revive The Jerry Edgar Spin-Off As The Replacement For Ballard To Save Money
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I was taken aback when Amazon abruptly ended plans for the Jerry Edgar spin-off, mere weeks following the cancellation of Bosch: Legacy. Initially, there were hints of more adventures to unfold within Michael Connelly’s engrossing crime saga, along with the Ballard spin-off. However, it seems that these plans have now been put on hold.
In an interview with The Irish Star back in October 2024, author Michael Connelly attempted to alleviate our disappointment over the shelving of Jerry Edgar’s solo show set in Little Haiti.
Amazon will observe Ballard’s performance first, and if all goes well, we hope to reintroduce Jerry later.
Amazon may indeed hold off on bringing back Jerry Edgar until they see how Ballard performs first. However, it’s highly unlikely that both shows would air simultaneously due to potential conflicts. Given that Amazon previously declined to run Bosch: Legacy and Ballard concurrently, it’s reasonable to assume they won’t do the same with the spin-offs featuring Harry Bosch’s sidekicks.
Legacy, and then replace it with Jerry Edgar, thereby reallocating costs within the Bosch-verse.
An advantage for Amazon is that the Jerry Edgar spin-off is set outside of Los Angeles, allowing them to save costs by relocating Michael Connelly’s universe away from its original setting.

Amazon Have No Faith In The Expanded Bosch Universe
Amazon appears to be handling the Bosch-verse as if it’s a series of sequels rather than an extended universe. Launched in 2014, Bosch ran for seven seasons until its conclusion in 2021, while Bosch: Legacy debuted in 2022 and will wrap up after three seasons in March 2025. The Ballard spin-off is slated to premiere on Prime Video in the Fall of 2025. While it may seem that Amazon is expanding the Bosch-verse, the actual reason for this approach is cost reduction. The two shows (Bosch and Bosch: Legacy) could have been combined into one show, but by labeling the latter as a spin-off, they were able to shed most of the supporting cast. This decision also promised fans two additional spin-offs starring Renee Ballard and Jerry Edgar. Initially, fans expected three shows running concurrently, but Ballard is actually the next installment in the series with a fresh set of characters, featuring occasional appearances by Harry Bosch to boost viewership.
Everybody Counts Or Nobody Counts
Following Bosch, Bosch: Legacy, and Ballard, the fourth installment in the series could introduce Jerry Edgar. This new addition will be accompanied by a fresh supporting cast, while allowing appearances from Harry Bosch, Renee Ballard, Honey Chandler, Maddie Bosch, and other characters in lesser roles. Shooting in Los Angeles without big-name stars and their high salaries will save costs, enabling the expansion of the Bosch-verse as claimed by Michael Connelly. Similarly, he mentioned guest stars for the Ballard spin-off in an interview with The Irish Star.
Originally, “Bosch: Legacy” wasn’t set to continue until we had progressed significantly with “Ballard”. However, this gives us an opportunity to reintroduce some characters from the “Bosch” series. Consequently, I expect there will be some unexpected cameos in the future.
The cast of Bosch: Legacy isn’t required to be absent from Ballard for it to exist; this principle applies to all television universes. However, Amazon seems to have made an exception for the Bosch universe. Essentially, Bosch: Legacy, Ballard, and Jerry Edgar’s storylines should coexist, offering thrilling crossovers and interconnected narratives. This is the concept Amazon presented to its audience, but they neglected to mention a few caveats.
