If you’re captivated by the dynamic realm of cryptocurrencies and frequently visit Reddit, be sure to watch the teaser for the forthcoming thriller “Cold Water,” directed by Cutter Hodierne.
In simple terms, “Cold Wallet” tells the story of Reddit users taking justice into their own hands against a cryptocurrency scam. They embark on a risky home invasion with the intention of capturing the scammer, portrayed by Josh Brener. However, their plan backfires when the situation doesn’t unfold as expected during the attempted kidnapping.
As a cinephile, I watched the trailer and saw the main characters in a tight spot – they discovered they owed a staggering $60,000 and felt utterly lost and helpless. They confided in each other about their predicament, and then, as desperation set in, we saw them heading to a gun store. In an attempt to retrieve money from an influencer, they decided on a home invasion, but soon realized that this was not going to be a straightforward heist.
As a cinephile, I can confidently say that “Cold Water” boasts an impressive ensemble cast. For instance, Raul Castillo, who gripped viewers with his portrayal of Darius Bravo in “Smile 2”, will captivate audiences once more. Horror enthusiasts might also recognize him from other films like “Breathe”, “The Inspection”, “Night Teeth”, and “Knives Out”.
In addition, fans of television shows will find familiar faces among the rest of the cast. Zoe Winters, for example, graced our screens on “Succession”, Brener was a staple on “Silicon Valley”, Tony Cavalero appeared in “The Righteous Gemstones”, and Melanie Diaz showcased her talent on the “Charmed” reboot.
The director of this film, Hodierne, has an impressive resume. His previous works include directing short films such as “The Bicycle Thief” in 2008 and “Fishing Without Nets” in 2012. Interestingly, he also directed the feature-length version of “Fishing Without Nets”, which was released in 2014.
Enjoying a thriller film like “Cold Water” that twists the home invasion trope is always engaging, as its trailer suggests the narrative isn’t straightforward. Since it wouldn’t be interesting if the main characters achieved their goals from the get-go, they’ll likely face numerous challenges before the end of the movie. Castillo delivers a captivating performance in the teaser, grappling with an extraordinary predicament he finds himself in. “Cold Water” promises a surprising and exhilarating story while also offering insightful commentary on financial stresses and cryptocurrency.
During a conversation with The AU Review, filmmaker Hodierne shared insights into making the film “Cold Water”, revealing that it was influenced by the classic horror movie of Stephen King titled “The Shining”. In simpler terms, he drew inspiration for his work from this well-known Stephen King horror film.
There’s an intriguing quality to that grand estate, or in the movie, the hotel – its starkness, the one-on-one confrontation, the calm before the storm, so to speak. The prey seems trapped, with no escape route. I can’t reveal too much, but our narrative was carefully controlled, avoiding unnecessary chaos and keeping the story on track. Yet we managed to keep a sense of psychological tension.
The film “Cold Water” made its debut at the SXSW Film & TV Festival and will be available in theaters and for digital viewing starting on February 28th, 2025.
