In the third installment of “Solo Leveling Season 2 – Rising from Shadows“, protagonist Sung Jinwoo ventures back into the formidably tough Demon Castle Dungeon, where he discovers the blueprint for a potent elixir known as the Holy Water of Life. This miraculous potion holds the power to heal all afflictions, even the supposedly incurable Eternal Sleep Disease that is gradually claiming his mother’s life. Meanwhile, elsewhere, a dramatic sequence of events unfolds as a person materializes from beyond a portal, forewarning of an impending catastrophe destined to strike our world.
In episode 3 of Solo Leveling Season 2, Jinwoo became stronger still and his father returned after a decade-long absence. This episode was filled with crucial moments that laid the groundwork for some of this season’s key story developments, as well as intense battles that peaked in an engaging fight against a demon, potentially as powerful as the fearsome Cerberus.
Shadows Yearn For the Mines
A Taste of the Comedic Potential of the Shadows
In the “Solo Leveling” anime, there’s a noticeably grave atmosphere compared to the original comic, but once Jinwoo finished the Job-Change Quest and became the Shadow Monarch, his Shadow troops introduce a comedic aspect whenever they appear outside of battle scenes on screen. This is especially true for Iron, the latest addition to his team, whose antics often provoke laughter, especially when other Shadows engage with him.
In the third installment, we find Jinwoo and Jinho wrapping up their 19th and concluding Raid, a crucial step for Jinho to attain the title of Guildmaster. Overwhelmed by the sight of the Shadow army, Jinho momentarily doubts his position, fearing he’s been superseded. However, upon completing the Raid and gathering Mana Crystals, they unwind at a barbecue spot. It is here that Jinho shares his painful past with Jinwoo; how his elder brother of a decade distanced himself and never engaged with him. In a heartfelt moment, Jinho wishes Jinwoo was his real older brother. Moved by this confession, Jinwoo immediately offers to be Jinho’s honorary older brother, causing Jinho to shed tears of happiness.
The Talking Magic Beast
Sung Jinwoo’s Father Appears
At the start, before the main titles roll, a scene unfolds featuring an unidentified man making his way through a wrecked, dungeon-like vessel towards a fully armored English speaker (James, a top-tier Hunter with an A rank). James is visibly scared as it’s evident that this stranger had eliminated his companions. Since they can’t communicate due to language differences, James tries to reassure him in English by explaining that he’s human and wishes to return home. Intriguingly, this enigmatic figure turns out to be Sung Il Hwan – the father of Sung Jinwoo and Jinah who disappeared approximately a decade before the series begins. The Americans apprehend him, prompting them to summon S-Rank Hunter Hwang Dongsoo, recently back from his visit to Korea, to assess if this mysterious captive poses any threat.
Sung Il Hwan asserts that approximately a decade ago, he became stuck in a Gate, subsequently reappearing from a Gate found within the United States. Given his emergence from a Gate, there’s no method to confirm whether he’s an unusual “human-like creature”. Upon the arrival of Hwang Dongsoo, his typical air of superiority is present, and Il Hwan’s enigmatic comments about humanity’s limited understanding of the Gates, the Dungeons, and the mystical energy that fills the world now only serve to embolden him further.
Il Hwan states his intention to stop a catastrophe, one so severe that no Hunter in existence could possibly prevent it. Upon reading Il Hwan’s records, Dongsoo discovers he’s Jinwoo’s father, causing him to emit a murderous intent as he addresses the “talking magical creature.” He demands that this creature meet with Jinwoo (who Dongsoo assumes is deceased) in Hell. We then see a quick glimpse of Jinwoo fighting demons within the Demon Castle, confirming Dongsoo’s assumption about Jinwoo’s location. However, when we return to Il Hwan and Dongsoo, firefighters are working to extinguish flames surrounding the destroyed building where Il Hwan was being detained. Dongsoo is found injured in the debris. The limited damage nearby suggests that Dongsoo was defeated instantly before the usual destruction caused by a fight between high-tier Hunters like himself and Il Hwan. The introduction of Sung Il Hwan at this point significantly alters our understanding of the characters we’ve encountered thus far.
Jinho Gets the Opportunity He Was Hoping For
His Father Wants Him to Sign Jinwoo At All Costs
Jinho demonstrates to his father that he fulfilled their agreement. As a qualified Guildmaster, he can now oversee Yoojin Construction’s new Hunter Guild, beating his brother to the position. He asks his father for control of the company, and while the father agrees, he demands that Jinho stops the White Tiger Guild from hiring Hunter Sung Jinwoo. The father is concerned about Jinwoo’s connection to strange Dungeon incidents, such as the Double Dungeon Incident, the deaths of Hunters on watch, and the Red Gate incident. Moreover, Jinho’s success in 20 Raids was due to Jinwoo’s assistance. Mr. Ahn from the White Tiger Guild, along with B-Rank Hunter Park Heejin, who survived the Red Gate, are unable to locate Jinwoo.

Jinwoo Takes a Trip
Revisiting the Demon Castle Instant Dungeon
I find myself observing as Jinwoo announces his upcoming journey, a week-long excursion that he believes will grant him the necessary time to advance in the Demon Castle Instant Dungeon, reminiscent of his close encounter with Cerberus in the first season of “Solo Leveling”. His objective is to finish gathering the components for the Holy Water of Life, an ambitious pursuit which leads him to brave the treacherous 100 floors of this demon-infested labyrinth that mirrors a corrupted Seoul.
Jinwoo aims to gather 5000 demon souls, achieving most with relative ease until encountering the first boss of the Demon Castle, Vulcan the Greedy, an enormous orc-like demon who moves faster than his appearance suggests and overwhelmingly surpasses Jinwoo in strength, as indicated by the red text in the monster’s name bar on the System’s HUD. The fight against Vulcan is intense, filled with captivating animation that elevates the manhwa’s quality significantly when adapted into its animated form.
Do the Undead experience fear?
– Sung Jinwoo to Metus, Guide of Souls
In the third episode of Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-, it’s clear that Jinwoo has grown more confident in handling intense situations, particularly evident in his battle against Vulcan. This fight, a thrilling display of combat choreography typical of the series, was further enhanced by Jinwoo’s strategic use of his shadows. His climactic move on Vulcan not only won him new equipment and rare items but also a fragment from the World Tree that once formed part of Vulcan’s weapon.
As Jinwoo’s troops move forward towards Metus, the Guide of Souls, they enter his domain. In a clear nod to Vegeta, Jinwoo inquires if the Undead can feel fear. After working diligently, Jinwoo has only one more item left to gather before he can create the Holy Water, so he decides to return home for the moment, unaware of the chaos that lies ahead. Overall, episode 3 was thrilling due to its skillful handling of several key plot points, while the altered sequence of events cleverly holds off on revealing this week’s main story progression, which will likely be explored next week.
