Studio Zero, an offshoot of Atlus, created the groundbreaking JRPG known as Metaphor: ReFantazio. In 2024, it swept through the gaming world, shattering sales records for Atlus games and garnering both critical acclaim and enthusiastic fan response. During that year’s Game Awards, it was crowned RPG of the Year and received numerous other honors, cementing its status as exceptional. Following its launch, Atlus has been improving the gameplay experience with updates, and they are currently working on an official manga adaptation of the game.
The opening chapter of the “Metaphor: ReFantazio” comic series is now accessible for free on the Manga Plus platform. Readers who are acquainted with the narrative will swiftly observe that the initial segment has undergone some modifications from the game’s storyline. To begin, before the main character, whose authentic name is now established as Will, sets foot in Grand Trad’s capital city accompanied by his fairy ally Gallica, they encounter a group of robbers. Unlike in the game where they were saved by Hulkenberg, in this manga, it’s the chivalrous knight Strohl who comes to their rescue instead.
Metaphor: ReFantazio Manga Now Available
In Grand Trad, Will encounters Maria before she gets abducted, teaming up with Strohl to save her. Later, he brings Maria to The Hushed Honeybee, where Gallica and Grius initiate plans for Louis’ assassination on the following day. The narrative thread involving Will and Strohl joining the military, encountering a human, and activating their Archetype abilities was omitted, making the storyline more concise and synchronizing it with the manga’s tempo. It remains to be seen when the manga will introduce Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio, as they are crucial for character growth and granting them the power to battle the game’s antagonists.
On previous occasions, Atlus has transformed one of its games into a manga series and altered the storyline. While the initial chapters of the manga version of Metaphor: ReFantazio diverge from the video game, the major events should adhere to the same chronology, albeit with certain scenes omitted to enhance flow. In time, it’s possible that this manga could be turned into an anime series, much like many Persona games. As of now, there’s no information regarding Studio Zero’s upcoming project or a potential sequel for Metaphor: ReFantazio. However, fans can reexperience the magical narrative by reading the manga.
