Over the past week, multiple Macross series made their debut on streaming platforms like Hulu and Disney+. However, enthusiasts of Macross Dynamite 7 might find this less than satisfying since certain scenes have undergone censorship.
The animated series known as “Dynamite 7,” originally launched in 1997-1998 as a 4-episode OVA, is now officially available for the first time in the United States. Interestingly, it’s not just the American version that has been censored; according to Anime News Network (ANN), even the streaming edition of this series accessible in Japan has undergone censorship as well.
In this part of the article, there are mentions related to child sexual abuse. If such topics make you uneasy, it’s best to skip over this section.
What Exactly Was Censored?
In the revised version, a significant amount of time has been reduced, excluding a storyline that centered around Mylene Flare Jenius, a character originally subjected to drug-facilitated sexual assault. This specific plotline appears to be omitted in streaming versions globally (including Hulu and Disney+), but it can still be accessed through pay-per-view or rental platforms in Japan.
Where To Watch Macross Officially
At present, 16 Macross series can be streamed on Hulu and Disney+ within the US, as well as in various other nations (outside the U.S., it’s exclusively on Disney+). However, not every territory where Disney+ is accessible has seen the release of these series (it appears to be limited to English-speaking regions). BIGWEST initially declared that all series produced from 1987 onwards would have a global debut on Disney+; however, this announcement was subsequently removed.
After a protracted legal dispute over the rights, Macross has now become accessible to international viewers. The Japanese company BIGWEST and American producer Harmony Gold were embroiled in the lawsuit due to Harmony Gold obtaining the rights to Macross (alongside two other series) from Tatsunoko, which they then used to create and edit Robotech.
In a disagreement, BIGWEST – not part of the deal previously – found themselves at odds with Harmony Gold concerning both ‘Macross’ and ‘Robotech’. This dispute was resolved in 2021. As a result, BIGWEST can distribute internationally all ‘Macross’ series produced from 1987 onward, while Harmony Gold retains the rights to ‘Robotech’. However, it remains undetermined who currently owns the international distribution rights for the original ‘Super Dimensional Fortress Macross’ (1982) and ‘Do You Remember Love?’ (1984).
