Summary
- Vampires in video games take various forms, from attractive deceivers to political puppetmasters.
- Characters like Bloody Mary, Prince LaCroix, Lord Harkon offer unique challenges in different games.
- The evolution of vampires, portrayed in characters like Lady Dimitrescu and Dracula, has captivated gamers for decades.
Over numerous centuries, the wicked figure of the vampire has been depicted in various guises across mythology, literature, movies, and video games. However, this timeless character continues to be reinvented, with fresh motives for their malevolence and even physical appearances being added, as the lore surrounding vampires evolves and adjusts according to cultural perceptions of these enigmatic creatures.
Vampires can take various shapes: they might be self-serving political schemers, seductive liars, embodiments of destructive powers, or emblems of unconquerable malevolence. Among the frequent villains in video games, vampires are notably recurrent. Giving a face and voice to these monsters, creating a fully-developed character, enhances the player’s understanding of the evil they confront. This makes their actions more detestable, intriguing, or even pitiable, despite the player’s opposition towards them.
8. Bloody Mary (Infamous 2 – Festival Of Blood)
Bloody Good Fun
The “Festival of Blood” expansion offers a terrifying graphic novel-style retelling of the “Infamous 2” universe, now dominated by bloodsucking creatures. The main antagonist and ruling vampire queen is none other than the legendary figure, Bloody Mary.
She serves as an entertaining, fashionable adversary for Cole, making their confrontations exciting and her ultimate defeat challenging. Bloody Mary, while less dramatic in her complaints, is a crucial addition to the more lighthearted Hammer film series’ brand of enjoyable vampiric storytelling in gaming.
7. Annalise, Queen Of The Vilebloods (Bloodborne)
Last Of Her Kind
In truth, Annalise and her group in the game Bloodborne are not fundamentally different from any of the other factions residing in Yharnam; they all appear to follow leaders who are mad and driven by self-interest. However, it’s important to note that Annalise is ruthless, bloodthirsty, and has no qualms about making sacrifices to attain her objectives.
The manner in which the character reaches Annelise’s sanctuary (or cell) portrays her as a very dangerous and unpredictable individual. However, her calm and commanding presence offers a striking contrast that is reminiscent of classic vampire characteristics.
6. Prince LaCroix (Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines)
Politically Minded Puppetmaster
LaCroix justifies his questionable actions by claiming to act for the greater good, while secretly benefiting only a select few, primarily himself. This cunning individual uses flattery and deceit as tools, treating others merely as stepping stones towards his ambition. In his own words, “Gaining power is not enough; one must also preserve that power.
In Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, the player doesn’t directly engage in combat with the prince himself, but instead faces off against his silent enforcer, known as “The Sheriff,” who serves as an engaging final boss battle. This encounter showcases just how much the player has grown in power over the course of the game. Following this climactic fight, if they so choose, the player can inflict a particularly humiliating death upon the Venture’s leader, providing a fitting end to their reign.
5. Vampire Lord Harkon (The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim – Dawngaurd)
Too Scared To Die, Too Dangerous To Live
The Dawnguard expansion offers one of Skyrim’s most compelling antagonists, who serves as a platform for an engaging exploration of the extremes that someone terrified of death might go to avoid their own demise, especially when given a taste of the immortality and power they yearn for.
As a gamer, I found myself embodying Lord Harkon, once a man desperate to cheat death as a vampire, now yearning for the fulfillment of a prophecy that would usher eternal night upon the land, allowing my kind to reign supreme. Yet, I couldn’t help but brush aside countless warnings that this prophecy could spell doom for my fellow undead brethren. The climax of our journey in Dawnguard was a heart-wrenching battle against a villain whose tragic and twisted nature left me questioning the true cost of immortality.
4. Lady Dimitrescu (Resident Evil Village)
Tall, Elegant And Deadly
The impact of Lady Dimitrescu and her following, extending beyond the boundaries of the tale they were part of, continued to exert a strong control over the internet for several months following their appearance in an initial teaser for Resident Evil Village.
Standing towering at more than 9 feet, Alcina Dimitrescu commands an intimidating presence, blending an air of classical grace with a heart-pounding fear as she prowls through the castle corridors. To navigate narrow doorways, she bows low. Her pursuit of the player sends pulses racing. Beyond her terrifying aspect, she has sparked fascination in many, showcasing that there’s a certain appeal for the intimidating and large-sized women.
3. Dettlaff (The Witcher 3 – Blood And Wine)
A Villain Of Great Depth
In the Blood and Wine expansion of The Witcher 3, Dettlaff is portrayed masterfully as the antagonist. Initially, he’s merely hinted at in whispers, known as “the Beast of Beauclair.” Dealing with another enigmatic slayer is nothing exceptional for Geralt; however, this one turns out to be far from ordinary.
Delving deeper into the story’s intricate web, I found myself astonished at the rich characterization of the so-called monster, elevating him to one of the highest echelons of literary mastery within the captivating world of The Witcher. For those who have immersed themselves in this game, it comes as no surprise that such profound writing is abundant here.
2. Kain (Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver)
Good, Bad, And Everything Inbetween
As a devoted fan, I’d say I find Kain truly fascinating. He seamlessly transitions from hero to antagonist, even dabbling as an antihero at times. From different viewpoints, he could be seen as any of these roles or even a blend of them all. Among the series’ vampiric villains, it’s Kain who stands out for his rich character development and depth.
Kain is richly endowed with thought-provoking dialogues, beautifully delivered by the charismatic Simon Templeman, which shed light on Kain’s unique perspective and what shapes him as a character. Following his adventures throughout the Legacy of Kain series leaves an indelible impression, as the player uncovers various aspects of his story from different time periods and viewpoints.
1. Dracula (Castlevania series)
Lord Of The Night
Through countless adaptations across various cultural interpretations, it’s no wonder that Dracula’s legend echoes in every corner of media and storytelling – be it under the brightness of day or the cover of night. However, it’s undeniably the Castlevania series that sealed his status as a gaming icon.
Throughout nearly every episode of the long-running series (spanning almost four decades), he has consistently presented himself as a formidable opponent for gamers, thus securing Dracula’s status not just as a renowned antagonist in literature and film, but also as a significant figure in the gaming universe.
