Robert Eggers Taking On Werewolves In 13th Century Set ‘Werwulf’

Following the thunderous success of Nosferatu, director Robert Eggers is once again collaborating with Focus Features for his upcoming project – a film set in the 13th century titled Werwulf. Remarkably, this announcement coincides with Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man experiencing poor box office performance during its debut weekend.

Werwulf Is Set To Be Released On Christmas Day, 2026

After the triumphant release of Nosferatu on December 25th, 2024, Focus Features has planned to unveil Werwulf on the same Christmas Day in 2026.

In 2024, Eggers effectively reinstated the terror associated with vampires through his portrayal of Count Orlok. The film Nosferatu earned an impressive $40 million during its initial weekend and is projected to conclude its theatrical run with a total gross of approximately $100 million.

It’s possible that the unexpected failure of the Leigh Whannell monster movie, which had high expectations for a strong opening weekend, left Wolf Man feeling disheartened. However, this setback doesn’t seem to deter Eggers from delving into the werewolf genre with his upcoming historical epic.

Robert Eggers Is Keeping Werwulf Historically Accurate

Robert Eggers is renowned for his deep interest in history, striving to make his films as historically authentic as possible right down to the smallest details. In doing so, he meticulously crafts every aspect of his movies, whether it’s the set designs and costumes in The Northman or exploring potential origins of Count Orlok in Nosferatu.

Just like Werwolf, it’s crucial to maintain historical authenticity. This story unfolds during the 13th century, with dialogue accurately reflecting the era as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Originally, Eggers planned to film in black and white, but that plan has since changed.

Under the guidance of director Robert Eggers, who collaborated with fellow screenwriter Sjón, “Werwulf” is slated for release on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2026.
