Summary
- Insomniac Games plans to adapt more games into films and TV shows, following the retirement of founder Ted Price.
- Sony is pushing for adaptations of first-party brands like Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War.
- After the failure of the 2016 Ratchet & Clank film, a new attempt is expected to be better due to advancements in CGI.
In light of today’s unexpected revelation that Insomniac Games founder Ted Price is stepping down, further developments about the studio’s upcoming plans have been disclosed, and this seems to be a trend among numerous gaming corporations.
In conversation with the popular entertainment magazine Variety, Ryan Schneider – one of the heads at Insomniac Games – shared that they are considering transforming even more of their video games into movies and television series.
Insomniac Games Wants To Do More Films, TV Projects
Schneider recalls, “I often find myself reminiscing about the ‘Ratchet & Clank’ movie from a few years back. And since we were involved early on with it, it naturally piques our curiosity. We have a special fondness for Ratchet & Clank, particularly that series.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but echo the sentiments of the exec who mentioned the 2016 Ratchet & Clank movie. Frankly speaking, it didn’t fare well at the box office and received harsh criticism from critics due to its uneven rhythm and an unremarkable storyline.
Given Sony’s impressive success with HBO’s The Last of Us TV series, it’s not surprising they are eager for more of their in-house brands to be transformed for both big and small screens. Not long ago, Sony revealed that a movie based on Helldivers 2 is currently being made.
Additionally, it’s also reported that Sony is working on a movie adaptation for Horizon Zero Dawn, as well as a television series inspired by God of War at Amazon.
As a gaming enthusiast, if this upcoming series gets anywhere near the caliber of “The Last of Us” from HBO, we’re in for an extraordinary experience. By the way, have you seen the newest trailer for its second season? It drops in April!
With the superior standard of CGI movies nowadays and the box office success of other video game adaptations, such as the Sonic movie series surpassing $1 billion in earnings, a fresh attempt at a well-crafted Ratchet & Clank film could undoubtedly outshine the 2016 failure.
