In the anime “Solo Leveling,” Sung Jin-Woo’s transformation from the lowest-ranked hunter to an elite one isn’t just about the monsters he eliminates in the dungeons; it’s also about the humans he is compelled to eliminate in the process. Betrayal and ruthless behavior are common during dungeon raids in this series, with the strong often targeting the weak without a second thought. For Jin-Woo, taking human lives when the situation demands it wasn’t a decision made casually. However, when he must choose between his own survival and that of a mad hunter, he always chooses to prioritize himself.
3. Hwang Dongsuk’s Group
The Deadly Set-Up In The Dungeon
- Season 1, episode 6
In the captivating series I’m engrossed in, Hwang Dongsuk’s group tragically underestimated Jin-Wooh, viewing him as just a disposable weakling. They had set up a dangerous mission within a C-rank dungeon, one that should have been a fatal blow for Jin-Wooh. But surprisingly, it transformed into their demise instead. The Dongsuk group are C-rank hunters, and they cleverly invited Jin-Woo and another low-ranked hunter, Joon Jinho, to join them under the guise of needing assistance. In truth, we were merely pawns for them, used to help clear the dungeon and hoard the essence stones for themselves.
As our group ventured into the dungeon, we battled with common beasts until we discovered the boss’s lair. When Dongsuk and his crew realized most of the essence stones were hidden within the boss’s lair, they blocked off the exit to ensure Jin-Woo and Jinho didn’t escape. Their plan was to hurl out the essence stones from another exit while the boss feasted on us, since whatever happens within the dungeon remains concealed. After all, no one would ever know about their heinous acts that took place deep within those walls.
After Jin-Woo overcame the spider boss in the dungeon, Dongsuk and his group emerged to finish him off since Jin-Woo and Jinho are low-rank hunters and considered harmless. However, Jin-Woo’s leveling system perceived Dongsuk’s party as an obstacle, compelling Jin-Woo to eliminate them for level progression. Although it seemed like Jin-woo would merely injure them to escape the dungeon, the situation led him to become a bloodthirsty maniac. As Dongsuk’s men approached him expecting an easy victory, Jin-Woo moved swiftly and killed them all, leaving only himself and Jinho alive in the end.
2. Kang Taeshik
The Face-off Against The Slayer
- Season 1, episode 9
The confrontation between Jin-Woo and Taeshik unfolded within the chaotic scene of a prison transport dungeon breakout, a sortie typically involving criminals who were also hunters being deployed as temporary labor inside dungeons. As a part of the Hunter Association, Taeshik accompanied three dangerous convicts in this operation, his job being to maintain order among the prisoners and prevent any escapes. Joining Taeshik, the prisoners, and Jin-Woo were seven other hunters, including Song Chi-Yul and Lee Joohee—two individuals with whom Jin-Woo had survived a previous Double Dungeon ordeal. In total, eight hunters embarked on this raid, but things soon took a turn for the worse.
In the heat of the raid, prisoners, suspected to be dangerous criminals, were mercilessly slain by Taeshik, denying them the chance to battle the dungeon creatures. The father of the daughter these prisoners had killed pleaded with Taeshik for retribution, but his request fell on deaf ears as Taeshik, a cold-blooded killer, took pleasure in such acts.
In executing these prisoners, Taeshik was exposed by two other hunters, yet he did not hesitate to eliminate them as well to conceal his wrongdoings. Subsequently, he targeted Jin-Woo, Joohee, and Chi-Yul. As the danger within the dungeon became increasingly clear to be Taeshik rather than the monsters, Jin-Woo stepped up to safeguard the remaining hunters.
For the first time, Kang Taeshik came to understand that Jin-Woo was not typical among the weaker hunters, and it was this realization that made him feel uneasy.
Currently, the system has spontaneously elevated Jin-Woo into his ruthless fighting mode. In an attempt to catch Jin-Woo off guard, Taeshik relied on his extraordinary speed and assassination techniques, assuming that a swift, fatal attack would end the fight. The encounter between Jin-Woo and Kang Taeshik was intense, violent, and conclusive. Enhanced senses and game-like abilities enabled Jin-Woo to anticipate Taeshik’s actions, ultimately picking the opportune time to deliver a lethal strike against him.
1. Kim Chul
The Ice Region Battle
- Season 2, Epsiode 2
Jin-Woo embarked on a dungeon expedition alongside Kim Chul, a top-tier hunter, and eight other skilled professionals. What started as a routine exploration took a turn for the perilous when the dungeon transformed into a crimson gate. Crimson gates signify certain doom for any unfortunate hunter who gets trapped within. Unlike ordinary gates that can be anticipated, crimson gates function as a one-way cell, erasing the exit until the entire dungeon is cleared. Jin-Woo and his companions found themselves in the territory of Ice Elves and Ice Bears, which provided him an opportunity to advance in rank. However, Kim Chul decided to split the group into two teams, keeping the more robust members with himself while assigning the less experienced ones to Jin-Woo.
In the heat of the raid, it was I who watched as the ice elves effortlessly annihilated Kim Chul’s hunting party. Fleeing in terror, he stumbled upon Jin-Woo and his surviving comrades, which enraged him further. Believing that a member of Jin-Woo’s team had hoarded essential supplies while the others perished unjustly, he laid the blame for his defeat at their feet.
Meanwhile, Jin-Woo was engaged in combat with the ice elves, summoning his shadow hunters to aid him in battle. Kim Chul harbored resentment towards Jin-Woo, vowing revenge. However, as the fierce battle against the elves continued, an opportunity for Kim Chul to strike at Jin-Woo presented itself. Alas, moments after lowering his guard, Igris’s spear pierced him through the chest. His final expression was one of raw terror and remorse, realizing too late that his cowardice had led him down a darker path.
In an instant, Jin-Woo unleashed his necromancer abilities, raising Kim Chul as a shadow soldier to serve him for eternity.
