Could 2025 Be the Year Volcanion Finally Joins Pokemon GO?

As new Legendary and Mythical Pokémon continue to join the franchise regularly, it’s challenging for mobile games like Pokémon GO to catch up. These rare creatures often take center stage in significant events or Special Research missions, with only a limited number being released annually. Although many yet-to-be-introduced Pokémon are from newer regions such as Galar and Paldea, some older ones are still waiting for their debut. However, the year 2025 might be when one overlooked Mythical Pokémon from the Kalos region finally makes an appearance: Volcanion.

Volcanion Is The Only Missing Kalos Mythical In Pokemon GO

In the sixth generation of Pokemon games, which includes Pokemon X and Y, the fictional region Kalos, modeled after France, made its debut. This area is home to three native Mythical Pokemon: Diancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion. So far, Hoopa and Diancie have been featured in Pokemon GO, with Hoopa being the main focus of a significant event due to its multiple forms. Interestingly, the Fire/Water-type Mythical Pokemon, Volcanion, has yet to appear in Pokemon GO. As of now, no explanation has been given for its absence; it might just be that developers Niantic prioritized other Legendary and Mythical Pokemon instead.

In 2023, Diancie joined Pokemon GO during the Pokemon GO Fest event, later becoming globally accessible in 2024 as a reward for finishing the Glitz and Glam Special Research. Conversely, Hoopa was the main attraction during the Season of Mischief in 2021. Its two forms, Confined and Unbound, were unveiled as part of a two-part event starting with Hoopa’s Arrival and culminating in Mischief Unbound. This marked one of the most complex and elaborate releases for a single Pokemon in Pokemon GO, featuring an in-game celebration, themed avatar items, multiple research tasks, and more.

Pokemon Z-A’s Launch Is The Perfect Time For Volcanion’s GO Debut

It’s possible that Volcanion could take center stage when the game “Pokemon Legends Z-A” releases in 2025. Given its title, this upcoming “Legends” game may primarily revolve around Zygarde, but it seems likely that other Legendary and Mythical Pokémon from Kalos might make an appearance somehow. Unlike “Pokemon Legends Arceus,” which didn’t solely focus on the titular Pokémon, this game featured later quests for catching various Pokémon like Darkrai, the Lake Guardian Trio, and Shaymin. However, some of these quests necessitated players to have save data from other “Pokemon” games.

It appears that Volcanion might show up in the series Legends Z-A, given its minimal attention in the initial Kalos games. Its background hints at the ability to clear away entire mountains with the steam it emits, which could prove beneficial for the city revitalization project mentioned in the trailer of Legends Z-A. However, since Volcanion is said to dwell far from human settlements, capturing it might be quite a challenge, potentially necessitating a long trek to its mountain abode.

Introducing Volcanion into Pokemon GO would align nicely with the release of Legends Z-A, given that Zygarde is already part of the game. It could be an exciting reward for a Z-A themed Special Research task during the launch of the game, which has been scheduled for 2025 but hasn’t yet revealed its official release date. While Volcanion would be the main focus, Zygarde might still play a role if the research or event provided a way for players to gather Zygarde Cells more swiftly in Pokemon GO. This could be an extensive task, as accumulating a substantial number of cells is crucial to transform Zygarde’s form.
