The looming shadow of corporate rebranding has claimed another casualty, and this time it affects a company that feels like family: as of today, Team17 Group is now known by a new name.
In the ’90s, this renowned studio transformed the gaming world by introducing hit series like “Worms” and “Alien Breed.” The studio emerged following a merger between 17-Bit Software and Team 7. Tragically, one of its founders, Martyn Brown, passed away towards the end of last year.
Effective immediately, the company previously known as Team17 Group has been rebranded as everplay. The decision behind this change was made to ensure a more distinct identity for the parent company compared to its affiliated entities, reports Eurogamer.
An Invisible Change
The arrangement in Everplay is divided into three main divisions. Among these, the one you likely know best is Team17 Digital, known for spearheading most of the game creation and distribution tasks. This sector of Everplay has seen significant success lately with the publication of the beloved simulation game My Time At Portia and the intense World War II shooter game Hell Let Loose.
In 2021, Team17 Group made a purchase of StoryToys. This company specializes in creating and distributing children’s games, collaborating on both original content and well-known intellectual properties like the Lego Duplo Peppa Pig game for Android, iOS, and Kindle devices.
17th Team Group has made a move to purchase the renowned German simulation studio, Astragon Entertainment. This business transaction, finalized in January 2022, was estimated to be roughly £83 million or around $112 million at the time of the deal.
Astragon Entertainment is known for creating the quirky yet tranquil “Bus Simulator” series, with its breakout success coming from Bus Simulator 18, first released in 2007. This German gaming company not only develops these unique titles but also publishes less-familiar games. They are also responsible for the German version of the Farming Simulator franchise.
At this point, it appears that the rebranding of the overarching company behind Team17’s game development and publishing divisions won’t make a difference for the players, as they will continue to see the publisher and developer named in the games themselves, rather than the parent company.
Despite acknowledging this transition, it’s hard not to feel a sense of melancholy about the situation. Team17 has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern gaming landscape on PC, so witnessing such a visual rebrand, even at a corporate level, carries a slight sting.
