Harry Potter Star Alfred Enoch Reveals Dream Role for HBO Magical Reboot

Summary

  • The Harry Potter TV show cast is being assembled with new actors for iconic roles.
  • Former Harry Potter stars like Alfred Enoch express willingness to join the HBO TV series.
  • Some fans believe casting former actors from the movies in the TV series would be distracting.

The casting team for the upcoming Harry Potter television series is being put together as production approaches. Interestingly, one actor from the previous Harry Potter films has shown interest in joining the new show, and they have a specific role they’d like to play.

As a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming HBO TV series that promises to stay true to J.K. Rowling’s enchanting book series. Though the movies are cherished by many as timeless masterpieces, this TV adaptation will undeniably feature fresh faces taking on the legendary roles of Harry, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and others. Some former cast members have raised questions about reprising their roles in the TV series, but one veteran actor seems open to the possibility.

During an interview with ScreenRant for his upcoming STARZ series titled “The Couple Next Door”, Harry Potter film actor Alfred Enoch expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the HBO TV series. Enoch, best known for playing Gryffindor student Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter movies, was asked if he’d be willing to come back as a different character, perhaps in a mentoring position. In reply, Enoch stated his desire to return as a Hogwarts professor, possibly as a Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor, a role that was replaced by a new character in each Harry Potter book and film.

I’d like to believe I’ve learned enough to guide others, but I fear another might be better suited for the role… I truly hope someone is available for that position. That sounds great. It’s just a temporary assignment, isn’t it?

Enoch aligns with Harry Potter film co-star Matthew Lewis, who portrayed Neville Longbottom, in expressing enthusiasm about taking on a new character for HBO’s series. To be more precise, Lewis is open to reprising his role as Professor Remus Lupin, the Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, originally played by David Thewlis. Not all actors who were part of the original Harry Potter cast are keen on participating in the TV show, though. Harry Potter’s original actor, Daniel Radcliffe, seems doubtful about reappearing for the series, reasoning that it might be disruptive if the creators aimed for a fresh start.

It seems that Hollywood often likes to have actors reprise their roles in remakes or fresh interpretations of projects they were associated with earlier. In the Netflix series Wednesday, Christina Ricci, known for her role in the ’90s Addams Family movies, takes on the part of a dorm mother to Jenna Ortega’s version of the main character. More recently, the movie version of Wicked included appearances by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who played Elphaba and Glinda in the original Broadway play.

The choices made regarding casting in this hypothetical Harry Potter TV series are frequently seen as playful references to the past or expressions of appreciation towards actors who initially portrayed specific roles. Yet, many enthusiasts advocate against including any actors from the films for fear that it may divert attention and appear as a mere trick. Since the new interpretations of Harry Potter characters will inevitably be measured against their earlier counterparts, incorporating the original cast members could merely amplify the shadow of comparison.

The Harry Potter TV series is expected to premiere on Max in 2026 or 2027.
