Many gamers, at some point in their youth, found themselves torn between their desire to play games and the necessity of completing schoolwork, such as history assignments, before they could do so.
Occasionally, we find ourselves seeking a game that closely mirrors reality when it comes to its historical authenticity.
You’ll find nine exceptional games here, each one historically authentic, offering immersive experiences into different eras. Some challenge you to conquer continents, while others test your survival skills; regardless, they all transport you to distinct time periods that can only be truly grasped by living them yourself.
This list could have been filled with first-person shooter (FPS) games from World War 1 and World War 2, but we aimed for diversity. If, however, you’re interested in historically accurate shooters, this collection is tailored just for you!
9. Empire Of Sin
Fight For Chicago
2020 saw the unveiling of a hidden treasure – a game produced by Romero Games – which immersed players completely in an attempt to replicate the chaotic, lawless atmosphere of the Prohibition-era Chicago underworld.
A significant aspect of the game has a similar atmosphere and playstyle to “The Godfather: Corleone’s Empire,” an engaging board game where players assume the roles of crime bosses leading families in New York City.
In the game “Empire of Sin“, you can expand your power by managing territories you already own or aiming to influence those outside your current domain. However, the gameplay also occurs on a more intimate level.
Running a criminal enterprise requires skillfully selecting the right individuals for each task, preventing disputes from spiraling out of control at inopportune moments, and maintaining financial stability. If you can successfully juggle these responsibilities simultaneously, you can establish your dominion in Chicago.
8. Red Dead Redemption 2
Reliving America’s Frontier
In the wild, unbridled expanses of the United States, lawlessness flourished and new beginnings were sought. Rockstar invested extensively to create an immersive 1899 environment, resulting in an enduring masterpiece.
As I traverse the landscapes of Red Dead Redemption 2, I’m captivated by the stark contrast between bustling industrial zones and vast, untouched cattle ranches. It seems that the Victorian influence from across the ocean has profoundly altered the American ideal of a town, yet it also underscores the far-reaching effects of this remarkable transformation.
In the game, numerous remnants and references from the American Civil War, which happened more than three decades prior, provide insight into the ideological turmoil the nation was grappling with as it struggled to emerge from a deep-seated crisis.
Just like most games, “Red Dead Redemption 2” deviates from reality in several ways, yet it more accurately portrays the authentic experience compared to the initial game in the series.
7. We. The Revolution
A Political Masterpiece
Delving into one of history’s intricate epochs isn’t a simple task, and maintaining accuracy by sticking to the original sources requires additional effort. However, Polyslash didn’t shy away from this challenge, resulting in the creation of We. The Revolution.
One exceptional legal game among many is “We. The Revolution,” although I must admit that Ace Attorney holds a special place. What truly sets “We. The Revolution” apart, however, is its unique and captivating environment.>
In this scenario, you’ll assume the position of a judge presiding over a revolutionary court during the French Revolution, specifically in the time leading up to the Jacobin regime’s rise to power.
As a gamer immersed in my virtual world, I navigate through scenarios spanning from petty heists and corporate squabbles to grand political intrigues. Amidst the chaos, ensuring the safety of those dear to me becomes paramount. It’s challenging, often unsettling, yet that’s what makes it captivating.
6. Crusader Kings III
The Peak Of Classic Paradox
Internal innovations are frequently mocked as just another variation of the familiar map simulator, offering only a slight twist on the original concept.
As a dedicated gamer, I can say that Crusader Kings III doesn’t veer too far from the formula that made its predecessor a hit, but it breathes fresh life into the experience with innovative mechanics and content. While its scope might be more focused compared to Crusader Kings II, the game still manages to captivate me in unique ways.
The game skillfully blends together strategic planning and role-playing features in an exceptional manner. While some experienced gamers find Crusader Kings III to favor role-playing a bit excessively, this is precisely what sets it apart.
In addition to its features, Crusader Kings III stands out with a refined touch and distinct personality that sets it apart from its previous versions, earning it the reputation as one of Paradox Development Studio’s finest self-published games.
5. Manor Lords
Medieval City Building
Back in April 2024, Slavic Magic introduced the game “Manor Lords” in its early access phase. Despite being incomplete, the game offers an outstanding gameplay experience.
As a gamer, I find myself captivated by Manor Lords, where the rhythm of creation and destruction sets the beat of the game. Every other aspect seems like an introduction or aftermath to these two fundamental dance moves.
In a simpler and more conversational style: Manor Lords stands out from other games by immersing you in the complete spectrum of managing a medieval city. You’re responsible for taking care of your citizens, encouraging them to construct marvelous structures, but the peaceful existence of trading and survival often transitions into needless acts of violence.
Witnessing the devastation of your cherished hometown as adversaries ransack it is an indescribable sorrow, yet this is precisely what great games achieve – they stir emotions within us.
4. Steel Division 2
Battles That Defined A Century
Instead of recalling the Normandy invasion when discussing significant attacks in 1944, many might not realize that the eastern front also witnessed a massive offensive known as Operation Bagration.
As a seasoned gamer, I find myself thrust into the boots of Soviet or German commanders during Operation Bagration – a pivotal offensive that ultimately transformed the region now known as Belarus into one of Hitler’s most devastating defeats in World War II, in Steel Division 2.
The game adopts a well-known deck-building mechanism, famously used in Eugen’s Wargame series, and combines it with a realistic and historically authentic battle encounter.
To this day, if only there was a game that combined the strategic depth of Steel Division’s gameplay and the diverse range of tactical options from Wargame. WARNO attempts to do so, yet it falls significantly short.
3. L.A. Noire
Post-War Cop Bonanza
Team Bondi’s solitary endeavor took a significant amount of inspiration from its publisher’s blockbuster title, Grand Theft Auto, yet L.A. Noire boasts numerous unique aspects that make it irresistible for players to develop a deep affection towards the game.
In the year 1947, the game L.A. Noire places you in the role of Detective Cole Phelps, who, along with his fellow officers at the LAPD, strive to maintain order and prevent the vibrant city of Los Angeles from succumbing to chaos amidst the post-war surge in Hollywood.
In a natural, easy-to-understand manner, L.A. Noire effectively blends thrilling gunfights with the nerve-wracking suspense of detective work.
Back when I first played this game, it was one of the pioneers embracing facial recognition technology, and boy, did it enhance the game’s ambiance! With so many aspects hinging on deciphering a suspect’s emotions, the tech really brought the experience to life. To maintain that immersion, Team Bondi went all out by creating one of the most authentic representations of Los Angeles in a video game yet.
2. A Plague’s Tale: Innocence
When Youth Meets Death
Modern rats may not be well-liked, but the common sewer rat in New York pales in comparison to the lethal creatures that plagued Europe during the Middle Ages.
In medieval France, where sickness and conflict reign, A Plague Tale: Innocence has you fleeing the Inquisition. You navigate through a crumbling landscape as the nation succumbs to plague and war.
As a gamer, I’d say “A Plague Tale: Innocence is an incredible historical narrative, offering a unique perspective on Europe’s bleakest moment, all seen through the eyes of kids amidst the chaos.
The game carries a substantial weight, reinforced by a robust narrative and accurate portrayal of the depicted towns and characters.
1. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
A Real Bohemian Rhapsody
The Holy Roman Empire had numerous aspects, yet simplicity wasn’t one of them. Speaking of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, it’s a remarkably authentic portrayal of life in Bohemia during the early 15th century.
In this role-playing game, we make slight adjustments in the battle sequences to enhance gameplay, but the majority of the techniques align closely with the principles of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).
In the game, most of its geographical setup mirrors actual locations, architectural designs, and structures. However, while the narrative within the game is largely imagined, it’s set against the backdrop of real-world historical events.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance might not perfectly mirror history, but it’s undeniably one of the most historically authentic games ever developed. What’s more, it manages to deliver this historical accuracy alongside superb gameplay mechanics, allowing players to learn and enjoy at the same time.
