Summary
- Until Dawn introduced innovative gameplay mechanics to create a surprising entry in Supermassive’s catalog.
- Alien Isolation surpassed expectations with intelligent AI, unique mechanics, and critical acclaim.
- ZombiU went unnoticed due to poor marketing but offered a unique survival horror experience as a WiiU launch title.
It’s often challenging for fresh survival horror games to make an impact because they’re competing with many others that have become well-known for their signature gameplay elements: resource collection and tense, nail-biting encounters against swarms of enemies. While these games are always fun to experience, the familiarity can sometimes lead to less excitement surrounding new releases, as people may expect more of the same rather than something truly novel.
Although there were doubts about their success, some survival horror games have managed to exceed expectations, offering an immersive and terrifying experience that was far beyond what anyone anticipated. Initially met with skepticism, these spine-tingling horror games delivered a top-notch gaming experience that players will remember for good or bad reasons.
8. Alien Isolation
The Vague Marketing Made It Difficult To Realize Just How Good Alien Isolation Would Really Be
From the trailers alone, it was quite challenging to predict how the game “Alien Isolation” would play out. The enigmatic scenes and sudden cuts to black, like in classic films, were intriguing, but there was very little actual gameplay footage, especially not with the Xenomorph actively involved. It’s unfortunate because it didn’t effectively demonstrate how intelligent and subsequently terrifying the Alien’s AI can be when in action.
Alien: Isolation boasts numerous exclusive features that set it apart from other first-person shooter horror games with run-and-hide mechanics, like the motion sensor, which can be problematic if overused. Regrettably, the promotion didn’t create enough buzz for the game, but upon its release, it was praised as exceptionally high quality and a critical favorite.
7. ZombiU
Despite Limited Hype As A Wii U Launch Title, ZombiU Defied All Expectations
The Wii U is frequently seen as the outcast among Nintendo systems, largely due to some unusual marketing strategies that failed to generate much enthusiasm from fans. Consequently, this lack of excitement carried over to the initial anticipation for the launch lineup, despite several games being entertaining and enjoyable, such as ZombiU – a first-person shooter survival horror game with an original twist that significantly alters the gaming experience.
As a gamer, when my character meets an untimely demise, I transform into a zombie, but with a longing to reclaim my valuable loot and arsenal. To achieve this, I must track down my mindless corpse and engage in a thrilling chase. The WiiU touchpad serves as an essential tool, allowing me to manage my inventory and consult the map, significantly heightening the immersion level.
6. Until Dawn
After A String Of Unpopular Releases, Supermassive Came Out Swinging With Until Dawn
Prior to the launch of Until Dawn, Supermassive Games hadn’t exactly been setting the world on fire with their previous releases. Apart from some DLC for LittleBigPlanet 2 and the more specialized games like Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock and Start the Party!, they weren’t exactly a name that everyone knew. Given this background, it’s no wonder that Until Dawn left quite an impression on many of us.
The game revolves around a gang of adolescents as they’re gradually eliminated by an enigmatic butcher, while also encountering a swarm of Wendigo wandering through the mountains. Its point-and-click mechanics, combined with the butterfly effect incorporated into its decision-making system, gives Until Dawn a unique and impressive edge, exceeding even the high hopes set for it.
5. Dino Crisis
Dino Crisis Did Well To Stand On Its Own After Being Dubbed A Resident Evil Clone
Initially, Dino Crisis appeared to many as nothing more than an imitation of Resident Evil when it first came out. Given how popular Resident Evil was then, it wasn’t unreasonable to assume that a game would be released that was essentially a spin-off of the series that was defining the survival horror genre at the time.
Indeed, the game Dino Crisis retains essential gameplay elements such as fixed cameras and a strong emphasis on puzzles, but it introduces a fresh element of dread by featuring dinosaurs instead of zombies, which developer Shinji Mikami later termed “panic horror.” Furthermore, the blend of sci-fi and horror gives Dino Crisis a distinctive identity within Capcom’s vast library.
4. Amnesia: The Bunker
A Hidden Gem Which Went Under The Radar For Many People
13 years ago, I was deeply immersed in the chilling world of Amnesia with its peak achievement being Amnesia: The Dark Descent. This game skyrocketed to fame thanks to countless streamers who dared to explore its terrors during the early days of Let’s Plays on YouTube. While the original and its sequel were warmly received, as time passed, the excitement for the series seemed to fade, leaving Amnesia: The Bunker in a less than ideal spot when it came to anticipation and marketing buzz.
In contrast, Amnesia: The Bunker proved to be an exceptional survival horror experience, maintaining tension throughout its duration. Its title refers to the dismal and filthy underground shelter that players explore, gathering resources and solving riddles, all while a grotesque creature lurks in the shadows, pursuing them. It’s rare to find a horror game that executes the stalker-style enemy as effectively as Amnesia: The Bunker, resulting in a surprisingly successful comeback for the franchise.
3. Outlast
Outlast Would Be A Surprising Breath Of Fresh Air That Seemingly Came Out Of Nowhere
In 2013, authentic survival horror games were scarce, with offerings like “Dead Space 3” and “Dead Island: Riptide” that year appearing more action-oriented and less genuinely terrifying, giving the impression of superficial fear which was a common perception of horror back then. Given this, it seemed that “Outlast” would follow a similar pattern, particularly considering the scarcity of trailers that left players wondering about its gameplay.
It’s fortunate that the game Outlast gained recognition as one that rejuvenated the survival horror genre through its distinctive approach to slow-paced gameplay. Instead of providing players with weapons for combat, it made them flee and hide from enemies. The camera system was another unique feature, requiring players to search every nook and cranny for batteries just to see the enemy stalking them in the darkness, creating a lasting impression that seemed unexpectedly intense.
2. Alan Wake 2
The First Alan Wake Was A Unique Survival Horror Game, The Second Was Like Its Own Genre Entirely
Back when I first played Alan Wake, it didn’t quite set the world on fire, but there was something unique about its story and characters that had me hooked. When they announced a sequel, I figured we were in for more of the same – torch ’em up, blast ’em away gameplay. Turns out, Remedy had other plans. Alan Wake 2 wasn’t just another chapter in the same series; it felt like an entirely new genre all together.
The game offers two distinct narratives, each with its own lead character, and the addition of Mind Place and Writer’s Room enhances the sense of being drawn into a terrifying world seldom seen in horror games. It not only built upon its captivating initial storyline but made it more complex and unusual. Moreover, the tale is underpinned by well-developed characters, intriguing themes, and thought-provoking concepts.
1. Silent Hill 2
From Mass Skepticism To Critical Hype, Bloober Did The Impossible
One could reasonably assume that the anticipation for the remake of Silent Hill 2 wasn’t particularly high due to the immense acclaim the original title received. Many view it as one of, if not the best horror games ever made; a truly unique and captivating experience. It was challenging to envision how Bloober Team, a relatively small studio with limited portfolio, could recreate the unsettling ambiance, chilling voice acting, and glitchy gameplay that contributed to the terror of the original game.
Yet, Bloober Team surpassed all predictions; they didn’t just meet expectations, but exceeded them significantly. The remake maintains the original storyline and core gameplay mechanics, but has been revamped to offer a smoother, more immersive experience without losing the charm of the original. Several environments have been enlarged, and the challenging encounters with terrifying characters like Pyramid Head have been made even more intense.
