As a gamer, I’ve come to appreciate Supermassive Games for their unique knack in crafting intricate branching narratives that often put me in nail-biting life-or-death scenarios. With each decision I make, the weight of cause and effect is palpable, shaping the course of the game in ways that are not always predictable or straightforward. Sometimes the outcomes align with my expectations, but other times, they take me by surprise – making every choice feel crucial and impactful.
As a gamer, I’ve encountered instances where thoughtful decisions on my part can lead to seemingly unjust character deaths. Beloved companions could meet their end for reasons that seem downright absurd, leaving me fuming in frustration. Sometimes the choices presented are misleading or there’s a deep, tragic irony to these unfortunate demises. Here are some of the most infuriating instances where I found myself yelling at my screen in outrage and annoyance.
7. Ashley and Chris Received a Dual Decapitation
Until Dawn’s Wendigos Can Mimic Humans to Lure them to an Unjust Death
In Until Dawn, the game provides ample clues to help players survive against the pursuing wendigos. However, if players aren’t paying close attention, their lack of curiosity might lead to their demise. For instance, when Ashley hears Jess’s voice in the sewers, she will be given the opportunity to search for her injured friend.
Ashley might not realize it, but what awaits her isn’t Jess – instead, it’s the wendigo disguised as a human. As she opens the trapdoor, this creature will leap out and behead her. If Chris is nearby, he may hear Jess’s screams and face a similar danger at that very same door. It’s worth noting that if someone is playing maliciously, they might be trying to get both Ashley and Chris killed by sending Chris in after her.
6. Jamie Or Kate Crushed By A Glass Wall
Killed By Du’Met In The Devil In Me
In “The Devil Inside,” the cunning serial killer Du’Met has crafted lethal trap rooms, such as one with a mobile glass panel that can squash an individual. Jamie and Kate find themselves on opposite sides of this deadly glass partition. As the glass advances towards Jamie, she faces a heart-wrenching decision: either accept her own crushing or reverse its course to harm Kate. It appears to be a lose-lose scenario with one of them destined for death. But there’s an unexpected twist… unless…
Isn’t it unlikely that a simple tool like a screwdriver could significantly impact a lethal device crafted by a ruthless serial murderer? It seems this individual isn’t very skilled as a serial killer, considering he allows the character who holds the screwdriver to shatter the wall, thereby saving them both.
5. Clarice Kills Eric
Vampire Massacre In House of Ashes
Dr. Clarice Stokes isn’t a character players can control in “House of Ashes,” but some have developed a liking for her. Consequently, they might act impulsively when deciding to assist her. When Rachel discovers Clarice in the temple, it’s clear that she has been bitten by one of the vampires and is clearly unwell.
When they reunite with their group, they’ll need to consider whether to include Clarice in their journey or leave her behind in the caves. It can be tricky to help an NPC in Supermassive Games as it often carries some risk. Ultimately, she turns into a vampire and ends up killing Eric.
4. Mike Shoots Emily For No Reason
Paranoia and Misinformation Causes a Misfire in Until Dawn
In another instance, Ashley’s lack of comprehension about what’s happening in “Until Dawn” leads to trouble. As Emily is trying to escape, there’s a chance she could be attacked by a wendigo. Later, when the others are hiding in the basement, Ashley and Mike might spot Emily’s bite wounds.
They quickly assume that Emily has been infected due to the tick bite, and she’s a potential source of imminent change. However, Jack Fiddler’s explanations about the game’s lore and hints suggest that whatever is causing the mutations on the mountain isn’t transmitted via bites. Yet, Mike has the option to kill Emily, perceived as a danger to the group’s safety that might not be real. Unfortunately, Ashley will only discover their mistake after it’s too late.
3. Julia Drinks A Beer
Misadventure and Thirst Brings Death in Man of Medan
In the game titled “Man of Medan“, characters Julia and Alex embark on an underwater expedition to investigate a sunken World War 2 aircraft. Following what appears to be an unsuccessful proposal by Alex, they receive a distress signal from their boat. Eager to address the situation, Julia swiftly ascends from the depths, exposing herself to the possibility of decompression sickness due to the rapid change in pressure. However, at this point, she seems to be unaffected.
At a later point, Julia’s brother Conrad proposes a beer to her. Drinking it would lead to her eventual death, though not immediately. Since Julia is an experienced diver, she understands the risk of alcohol consumption for divers, as it can exacerbate decompression sickness. Despite this knowledge, players may choose to have her drink the beer. If she does take a sip in the end, having already survived pirates, hallucinatory gas, and a deteriorating ghost ship, she will ultimately fall victim to decompression sickness.
2. Fliss Stabs Brad
Mutual Hallucinations in Man Of Medan Makes Fliss See a Grim Reaper
- Featured in: The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan
In the game “Man of Medan“, it’s not the pirates or ghosts that are truly menacing, but rather a hallucinogenic substance that the ship was carrying. This substance has been influencing those on board, causing them to perceive various terrors. At times, they even see their fellow passengers as monstrous entities and apparitions. If Fliss encounters Brad while under the influence of this gas, she will mistake him for the Grim Reaper.
In simpler terms, the character has an option to attack what appears to be the Grim Reaper, unintentionally causing Fliss to kill Brad. But this confrontation can be skirted if Fliss steps outside for some fresh air instead. Providing Brad with a gas mask would also stop him from attempting to harm Fliss in the first place.
1. Kaitlyn Freezes To Death
Getting Trapped in the Camp Kitchen in The Quarry
At the beginning of “The Quarry“, the character can initially explore the lock on the walk-in freezer located in the camp kitchen. It appears to be securely fastened, which raises concerns about safety. The danger is that someone might become trapped inside and suffer from hypothermia or even death due to the cold.
In her journey back to the lodge, Kaitlyn encounters a chattering toy rabbit that could potentially save her from the pursuing werewolf. If Abigail fails to pick up the rabbit at the game’s start, it seems like Kaitlyn might have no choice but to hide in the freezer herself. However, if she ends up in the freezer with the werewolf, it will result in a fatal attack. On the other hand, if she finds herself alone in the freezer, hypothermia could prove deadly.
