The game FragPunk has gone through numerous rounds of testing to enhance its performance and incorporate player suggestions. In a conversation with Game Rant, creative director Xin Chang explained how these trials have shaped and modified FragPunk.
FragPunk has completed multiple rounds of testing, starting with a closed alpha from June 27 to July 1, 2024, followed by a closed beta from October 10 to October 21, 2024. These trials have led to various modifications in the game, some of which are now being disclosed.
FragPunk’s Changes Since The Playtests Explained
Quality-of-Life Improvements And New Cards
Chang emphasized the improvements in user experience that FragPunk has experienced since its 2024 playtests. Moreover, he mentioned the addition of new Shard Cards to the game, which will be introduced during its upcoming March release, beyond what was tested previously.
We’ve made substantial adjustments to several functions following input from players and the community during testing. We’ve also included a lot of fresh material for the initial release. For instance, we’ve developed numerous new Shard Cards, some of which are influenced by player suggestions. Additionally, we’ve enhanced the shooting experience in various ways, such as slightly decreasing the recoil of all firearms to make them easier to handle, again based on player feedback. Essentially, FragPunk will be more fun and engaging at launch due to these changes. Keep an eye out for new content being rolled out before launch!
Regarding FragPunk’s Shard Cards, Chang further discussed the balancing efforts for the game’s final release. Some players have voiced concerns over the RNG aspect of Shard Cards in FragPunk, and although Chang acknowledged that randomness is an integral part of the game, he also disclosed that the team has observed some uninteresting cards appearing too frequently during testing. They are currently developing new strategies to address this issue. Additionally, Chang provided insights into the process the team follows when incorporating additional cards into the existing gameplay.
As a gamer, when new Shard Cards are being dreamt up, I’m part of the team that helps shape these ideas. Each of us specializes in different aspects of the game – combat, levels, and Lancers. Our goal is to ensure every card doesn’t tilt the balance too much in any one area. We strive for consensus that a card’s rule-bending power stays within bounds. Before these cards hit the gaming scene, our Quality Assurance team puts them through rigorous tests to guarantee they don’t upset the game’s overall equilibrium.
FragPunk Into The Future
Chang didn’t go into great detail about FragPunk’s post-release plans, but he did provide some interesting insights by verifying certain aspects. He made it clear that FragPunk will follow a seasonal schedule and they are currently working on content to be released towards the end of 2025. Furthermore, he hinted at some exciting narrative developments in the game’s future.
At present, we’re working on expanding the storyline within the universe of FragPunk, aiming to establish a comprehensive and immersive “FragPunk Universe”. Over time, you can expect to meet and learn more about the characters in our team, The Lancers, as we gradually reveal them through upcoming updates.
The characters of the Lancers from FragPunk will be developed further. This is crucial for a hero shooter game, as forming connections with character designs and personalities often transforms players into loyal fans. A charming cast can strengthen player engagement, contributing to an emotional bond not only with the characters but also with the storyline, a fact evident in games like Overwatch 2 and Apex Legends.
