It is possible that the game Starfield may become available on additional consoles in the future, according to Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming. In September 2023, Bethesda’s space RPG was launched for Xbox Series X/S and PC. Five months afterwards, Spencer declared that certain Microsoft-owned games would become available on rival gaming consoles. This move towards multi-platform publishing kickstarted with the games Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves. Other Microsoft titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle were later confirmed to be released on platforms other than Xbox as well.

Despite Starfield currently being an exclusive title for the Xbox console in early 2025, there’s a possibility that this might change soon. This is based on what Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer hinted during an interview with Destin Legarie in mid-January of 2025. When asked about whether Starfield will remain exclusive for the time being, Spencer responded vaguely. He had previously stated in November 2024 that Microsoft has no restrictions when it comes to deciding which first-party games could potentially be released on platforms other than Xbox.

PS5 Version of Starfield Has Long Been Rumored

As a keen gamer, I can’t help but wonder if Starfield, that tantalizing galaxy-hopping RPG from Bethesda, is indeed bound for more platforms beyond Xbox and PC. Whispers of a PlayStation 5 version have been swirling around since Microsoft announced their multi-platform game publishing strategy. However, so far, there’s been no solid confirmation from Spencer or the team. Given that Bethesda had been working on a PS5 port before Microsoft snapped up ZeniMax Media in March 2021, it seems plausible that Sony’s current-gen console could be Starfield’s future home.

Starfield Seems Less Likely to Ever Land on the Switch 2

Despite predictions that the upcoming Switch 2 boasts greater power than its original counterpart, it may not match the processing prowess of the PS5, potentially ruling out the possibility of running the game Starfield on the platform. Yet, rumors swirl from Xbox Game Pass leaker eXtas1s suggesting a version of Starfield for Switch 2 remains possible.

Speaking about upcoming Bethesda projects, it’s official that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be available on PlayStation 5 in spring 2025. On the other hand, there are whispers about a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion using Unreal Engine 5, which is allegedly being developed by Virtuos and may also release for the PS5, although not on its launch day. Since early 2024, Microsoft has consistently emphasized that their strategy of multi-platform publishing is aimed at staying ahead of industry trends, suggesting that the gaming market as a whole is shifting away from platform exclusives.
